Pension deductions whilst on maternity leave

Apologies if this has been asked before but I’m due to go on maternity leave at the end of May and I have not opted out of my NHS pension (my partner and dad are financial advisers and both had a full blown meltdown when I mentioned considering opting out whilst on leave so that went out the window 😭😂) I’m currently a B7 and paying I think 9.8% but will obviously be on much less whilst on mat leave. I’m taking 39 weeks and spreading my OMP over this period. Does anyone know if what you pay towards your pension reduces whilst on mat leave? I assume I won’t be paying 9.8% of my usual salary when I’m not actually earning that?! How does it work?! Thank you!!

As far as I’m aware you do still pay the same percentage but your salary will be a bit lower than usual so it won’t be quite as much as usual. I was a B7 on the same % pension, and I don’t recall it changing.

@Amy thank you, was hoping it would be something like that 😊

My partner also had a meltdown when I said I wanted to opt out 😅 it’s the same percentage but obv lower as previously said x

You stay on 9.8% but as your total pay is less it’s 9.8% of a lower amount. I split mine over 12 months and in the last 3 months because I was only getting about £1000 I paid about £30 per month into the pension. It is much better to stay in it you will thank your dad and partner when you are older

Yes I’ve done the same and stayed in the pension! As everyone else has said I’ve just been paying less while I’m on mat leave, in my trust you have to make up what you haven’t paid into your pension when you get back to work, as the trust have still been contributing their percentage of your original salary. I think they do it in instalments so it’s not a big chunk when you get back but does lower your salary a bit for a few months. Not sure if all trusts are the same though x
