I was told my bump was 9th centile at 28w, growth scan showed 51st centile. Bump stalled in growth at 36w and the growth scan showed 54th centile. I've learnt to take them with a pinch of salt especially when it's different midwives each time, some of us just have small bumps too but I was so quick to worry too
I had this happen to me at around 34 weeks as well my midwife explained she thought my bump was too small. . I had my first growth scan a few days after being referred and everything was normal, I have my final one next week at 37 weeks just to confirm everything is still ok. My midwife still thinks my bump isn’t very big but from the scans I’ve had the baby is growing at a good rate and she’s healthy! I wouldn’t worry about it I’ve heard the same from other moms in the same position and everything turned out just fine 😌
Aw thanks girls , as a first time mum you hear the words emergency growth scan and panick lol My appointment today felt really rushed as it wasn’t her clinic as such and none of this was really explained properly x
These measurements should be taken with a pinch of salt. I've been measured twice and baby isn't even on a percentile they are apparently that big. With my first, I got told throughout I had a small bump. Growth scans showed I would have a small baby at 6lb. She was born a healthy 8lb 5oz. So growth scans ain't much better in my opinion.
@Emma I can second this I was expecting a very average size baby 7lb something and he was 9lb 4!!! Growth scan was very inaccurate. My midwife’s belly measurement was more accurate actually. The midwife’s bantered my consultant about it and said ‘eh who did this growth scan then’ 😂 he wasn’t impressed.
Same here my bump measurement was wayyyy below the average line on the graph - had an urgent scan booked for 2 days later and baby was exactly where she should’ve been. I’m quite tall so baby just has lots of room inside to stretch upwards rather than outwards 🥰
I have been through this every single time they do it to the point they’ve said to just have regular growth scans instead. The measuring is never accurate!! Don’t worry as it was all fine! My baby is a little smaller than where he should be but I was told that in the beginning due to my health an tha. Xxx
Please don’t worry, this is so, so common! I got referred earlier this pregnancy because my bump measured small, then at the scan the next day they put baby at 97th percentile! (Then a week later a different scan put my baby at 51st percentile, so who knows how big she actually is!!!) I’ve had midwives measure so differently to each other, definitely try not to worry!! Good luck at the scan tomorrow
Heya! There’s a large margin of error with the fundal height measurements, ESPECIALLY when you have different midwives measuring each time. My midwife said this to me herself actually, that there would naturally be variation in where a different midwife would start and end the measurement. It’s not an exact science at all, and is a rough estimate/indication of growth. Even the same midwife can vary her approach without realising!
