Tonsillectomy and Adenoids surgery

PLEASE HELP🫶🏾 Hi guys, I was wondering if you or any of your kids have been through this surgery. My little had hers today and I’ve honestly got myself in a loop about pain management. Am I supposed to be giving Calpol and Nurofen every 4 hours day and night - spacing 2 hours between both medicines for the first few days. Ignoring the 4/3 dose rule per day. Basically giving a constant loop of both medicines day n night until she starts to feel better and going back to normal 4/3 dose rule? Really hope that makes sense😭

What do you mean by 4/3 loop? Paediatric surgical nurse here 👋 Calpol (paracetamol) is once every 4-6 hours maximum 4 times a day (in 24 hour period). Ibuprofen (nurofen) is once every 6-8 hours maximum 3 doses in a 24 hour period. We usually say to give painkillers for upto 2 weeks after such surgery as the pain can get very uncomfortable. Also encourage child to drink sips of water as a dry throat can cause pain. Hope that makes sense.

I think it is better if you call back your consultant or ward to clarify the instructions. If you don't know their contact numbers, call NHS 111, they will be able to get you in touch with them.

What makes you think you ignore the maximum amount you're allowed to give per day? Has the consultant said that?

@Rachel consultants sometimes advice to go above the doses advised in the box. Sometimes they don't give you written instructions either. It is also likely she is tired and can't remember what they said.

@𝔾𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 This is exactly what was happening! I’d also been seeing forums of other parents saying they were giving the medicines round the clock day n night. Was really worrying I’m going to mess this up for my daughter by not giving her enough or too much. As she was in a lot of pain but did have the recommended amount Just called the ward and they said only to give if she’s waking up during the night and yes as you’ve all said give it per pack instructions! The every 4 hours between both medicines was only for yesterday Thank you all so much🫶🏾🩷it’s amazing how completely obvious all of this is now seeing your comments😂🙏🏾but when it’s only you vs google at 4am. Google always wins👀💩😂

Hope she feels better soon my son has his done last year and grommets once the anesthetic wears off she will be in pain let her sleep and give pain relief if she wakes up and lots of sofa and mummy cuddles xx

@Siobhan thank you so much!

@Saff it’s tough but so worth it in the end my son had it done cause of a speech delay and it’s made such a difference his words are coming thick and fast

I had mine out in later life. Dreadful time so your child has my sympathy. Please keep an eye out for signs of medication overdose. I was prescribed codeine and ended up overdosing because I was also taking it at night as well as during the day, and that was me following the normal timings between doses. Hot sweats and heart palpitations and a call to 111 had me in the A&E. Speak to your primary GP/pharmacist about dosing and dont administer anything above that. It would probably be best to alternate pain relief paracetamol/ibuprofen to prevent this from happening. Also, plenty of ice water, or just water if you can get them to drink it, helps heal a lot faster and keeps the scabs nice and lubricated and helps reduce bleeding. Hope bub is feeling better soon ♥️
