Baby gagging on hands

Hey y’all. My daughter turns 5 months in a couple days. She’s teething and loves putting her hands in her mouth. But sometimes she gags herself. Especially when she’s tired - I think she’s more forceful with chewing on her hands when she’s tired. Anyway, she sometimes gags herself and today she actually vomited poor thing. Has anyone else experienced this? Will she just learn her limits eventually? I hate seeing her get sick like that.

Normal part of baby development!

Yeah my baby will gag himself too 😂. I love the moonjax teather because he can already hold it and he can’t get the parts too far into his mouth

It’s developmental for them it teaches them to only put things in their mouth past a certain point so that they don’t choke when they begin eating real foods. You just kind of have to let them. They may still gag when starting solids that is okay, don’t intervene with gagging if they are loud and red they are fine if they are silent and blue they are choking!

Yes me and my boyfriend find it kinda funny now cause she was doing it a lot and I think she's since learned to not put it so far into her mouth cause it doesn't happen as much anymore

Good to know we aren’t alone. And that it’s a normal part of development. @Michaela I will look into that teether you mentioned.

@Brittney yeah she gets so red and I find it so scary. But I don’t want to stop her from developing. I was going to start purées today, actually. But I decided against it because I’m so fearful of choking. I’m signing myself up for another CPR class to empower myself

@Finn thank you. You’ve reassured me on several of my posts! lol

You should be fine to start purées! My son does the same thing with his teething toys but does WONDERFUL with purées. Since you’re controlling the spoon you can control if it gags them or not, they don’t quite understand yet that they control their hands or that their hand is the reason their are even gagging! It’s trial and error but as long as the ped has okayed starting purres you’re perfectly fine to!

@Alicia thanks for the input. Sounds like she will eventually learn to not gag herself while exploring things with her mouth

My daughter does that to herself too

@Brittney I went ahead and trialed purée with her an hour ago and she loved it! No gagging. I put some on her hand so she’d feel more in control but she seemed to prefer me spoon feeding. Thanks for the boost of confidence

So awesome to hear! Glad I could help!
