Chat GPT

Does it annoy you that people use Chat GPT for literally everything now? I just saw someone posting that they asked it if their pregnancy test was positive. Like, it's so bad for the environment and then you're going to ask it for something ridiculous like that when you know you'll need to go to a doctor to get confirmation, plus you'll likely take a few more at home tests in the coming days anyway? People have no critical thinking skills anymore and using it for nonsense like this is going to make it worse.

No way is it healthy to be going to your computer god for therapy and grocery lists and constant in your own voice validation.

@Selena exactly. It's unhealthy. I get using it for some things but I swear people are using it for really dumb and lazy reasons.

I’ve used it for a few things but never as my only or primary source of information. My daughter wanted a story about a “Dino princess” and I was mentally drained so I used it then. The closest I’d get to asking medical advice would be like “What’s a good way to get rid of hiccups?”

@Maddy right! And it literally wastes sooo much water to power these engines. I'm like, people, just do the thing on your own. Again, I completely understand using it sparingly and for some things, but people are just getting lazy and incompetent. It scares me how much people rely on this type of thing especially because the artistic aspects of it were stolen from artists.

I didn’t know about the environmental impact, I’ll have to look into that aspect!

@Maddy yes. And unfortunately when we use it to write emails or anything like that, or ask it to generate pictures, it generates that through all the theft of artists and writers. Like, these authors and writers work were used to train AI and they do not get compensated for it, nor do they even get recognition (because then they'd have to get compensated for it. Terrible loop to be in for the artists and authors when they know their stuff has been used). There's a lot wrong with it, but that's another ethical reason why I've only ever used it once and it was before I found all of this out.

every time i see people on here recommend another person uses chatgpt for a very simple question that could've been answered by looking it up, i cringe

My kids have received some children’s books that were made by AI. I was pretty caught off guard because I didn’t know it was a thing yet. Some of them are poorly written and have a lot of errors. Maybe they should have a human proofread them. I will take a book written by an actual person any day. My mom bought them because they looked cute. She doesn’t know that they aren’t written by humans.

Maybe I’m old but I don’t even know how to fund ChatGPT or anything about it. Like is it on Google? Do you download something? Idk. It gives me the ick

Not me using it just before this to figure out if I should restart my failed tomato plants or just say fuck it and plant them outside 😂 I just got it yesterday and I’m not hating it lol

My team at work got a new supervisor who used it for EVERYTHING - he only lasted 2 weeks because it was found out he didn't know how to do our job AT ALL but was using chatgtp to seem like he did 😂

me watching someone use Chat GPT to design their tattoo, meanwhile I'm currently designing a tattoo for cheap for a client because $10 is better than none: 👁👄👁 its the worst when someone close to me is making AI art, because no one thinks it's that deep but for me it's like watching a robot take my job in real time while everyone just says "Why would I pay you for a commission when I get this AI art for free?". It's bad for the environment and it's bad for human creativity and art as we know it.

@FairyMother 🦖🌸 exactly! I am friends with some writers who have had their work stolen to train Chat GPT AND Meta! It's extremely frustrating. I used to draw and paint like a decade ago. It takes so long but it is hard work and to see so many people say that it doesn't matter is horrible.

@Tarlia wow! See! I worry that it's only going to get worse if people keep using it. When I hear about stuff like this, I just think of the movie Idiocracy. It used to be hilarious and far fetched to me. Now I'm just thinking that there's no way our society is declining this quickly.

@Haley I used it once and I don't remember if I had to download it or if it's a search engine.

@Kim this is also scary because it's becoming more sophisticated in ways. It can fool some people that don't know what to look for and it's unfortunate that people are making money off of sub par work and taking advantage of people.

@Parker 又 therapy? 😯 Yikes. I haven't heard that one. Dear Lord please help our society!

@destiny 🪬 yeah, hard pass!

My friend uses it to write messages to her children's fathers though which is really helpful as it takes emotions out of it and just states facts but it can definitely be overused.

I don’t think people realise how awful for the environment it is!

I’m a writer. I hate it with every fibre of my being. It’s dreadful for the environment and people’s cognitive function, it’s being used for things that human creativity had covered because people want things now now now, and not quality, and no one takes five minutes to consider the impact, because they’d rather be Barbie. So much wrong with it, but I won’t go on as will be late for work!

Another thing I hate about AI is how unavoidable it’s becoming. You can stay away from ChatGpt but then there’s AI mode on Google that takes up the whole screen, and there’s also Gemini, and that robotic auto suggestion feature in Gmail. And you can’t turn any of it off. It’s kind of awful the way it fracks your brain.

@Selena I hate that you can’t turn it off/uninstall it. It’s such an invasion.

@FairyMother 🦖🌸 why is it bad for the environment?

honestly chatGBT is so much better than google, it gets straight to the point and i don't have to read multiple articles just to get a simple answer to a question i have 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Glory for me personally, this isn't a good enough reason for me if I'm being honest, unless you've only done it once a semester. But even then, I personally wouldn't use it for this. There are things like Quizlet and other ways to make flashcards, etc. In fact, studies have shown that physically writing things down is very beneficial for remembering.

@Donna yes to all of this. And about Barbie... It's a moment of their day and then they forget about it, but their impact is forever. This is the bad place.

@Glory I don't want to argue, but since you asked, I'm going back to part of my original rant. People (I'm not saying you, I'm saying this about people who use it as a crutch generally because this is how I view using AI overall) are becoming lazy, wanting things immediately instead of valuing quality, and losing the ability to think critically. Again, it's also bad for the environment. I'd rather drink that water than pour it on the ground. This is not a dig at you at all. I was just saying I'd rather not use it for things that I can do. Even if it takes a little more time and effort.

@Glory No, girl, you're fine..I was actually trying to soften the blow because sometimes when you disagree with people on this app they take it very personally. I was just gearing up for that. And that's so sad. The relationship isn't authentic and when they converse in person the partner who doesn't use it is going to wonder what happened to the charismatic person they talk to via text. It's all just crazy. It honestly makes me want to scream. Lol.

@Glory That is so Black Mirror. 😟

@Glory I agree. I think it's okay sometimes for some uses and when used very sparingly. But like my post says, too many people use it for very unnecessary reasons and that's what really grinds my gears. Lol

I hate it. It’s starting to take tangible effects on people who live close to the processing centers. Their water pressure is extremely low, sediment sits in their pipes and pollutes what water they do get, and it’s burning through a bottle of water with every *single* question we ask. I don’t understand why it’s environmentally legal.

@Stacey 🇵🇸 I'm so so sorry. That's horrible. This is why I hate it too. It's ruining the earth, and hurting real life people in real ways. I wish more people were aware of this. And those who are aware of it and still use it unnecessary, I wish they would start to rethink it because of all of the above AND it's rotting their brain. Basically for me, the cons outweigh the pros

@Stacey 🇵🇸 It’s horrendous, but like many things with the environment, I think most people just don’t care. And all the conspiracy theories about it all being fantasy do not remotely help. 😣

Incog and that’s it right there- “The cons outweigh the pros”. I can’t imagine using AI, especially frivolously, knowing that our neighbors, our children, the earth itself is suffering in real life. Also yes to the brain rot. I get anxious thinking about how much mental lifting AI is going to be doing for my children if I don’t teach them to rely on their own resources and humanity to self-sustain. It’s a slippery slope.

@Donna I have to wonder if people tell themselves lies like that in order to soothe their own conscience. It’s hard to accept that something so immediate and (relatively) reliable is causing so much destruction.

@Stacey 🇵🇸 I think the majority do, but unfortunately there are dangerous people with too much power and influence taking advantage of them.

@𝔾𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 AI systems, particularly data centers, require substantial cooling, which consumes vast amounts of water and electricity. Which means increased greenhouse gas emissions and a growing carbon footprint.

@Stacey 🇵🇸 yes to everything you've said! It's a slippery slope because when you start justifying it for one thing, it starts to make it easier to justify it for everything else too. When does it stop? Because we all know that our society loves convenience so why spend time on something when AI can create/generate something in an instant. Why use your brain when AI can give you the answer.

@FairyMother 🦖🌸 OK, but then so it is to keep your email full, use the cloud and even using peanut.

@𝔾𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 The proportions are very different, that's like comparing the water use of a backyard kiddie pool to a large waterpark.
