My baby is almost 5 months and we start him on piccolo purrees for the first 4 times and he had diarrhoea too. The moment I changed to baby rice and seeet potato the poo returned to normal.
@Cristina he probably had diarrhea because he is too young to be eating solids or purees yet. Also, baby rice is pointless because it has no nutritional value in it.
I attended a weaning course the other day where they said baby rice is getting a bad wrap for no nutritional value but that it contains carbohydrates and therefore they have some value because we need carbohydrates but better mixed with other things and not used too often.
@Rachel he is at the right age to start solids. He had other foods that he enjoyed with no issues like kendamil banana porridge. The baby rice I mix with other vegetables so no it is not pointless and yes it is nutritious.
@Cristina No, he is not at the right age for solids at all. You are not supposed to give them solids until they are 6 months old. Baby rice has been proven to have no nutritional value.
@Rachel I am not sure what are you basing your opinion on. Our paediatrician recommended us to starts solids when we did due to his good neck control. And yes baby rice was one of the foods that our doctor recommended to start with along with baby porridge as they are both bland foods and you can progress from there to vegetables and so on.
Keep a note of what he’s eaten when he gets the diarrhoea. It may be his tummy getting used to it or an indication that his bowel is too immature to process things yet, but it can sometimes also indicate an allergy. There are some studies no emerging to suggest that weaning babies before the bowel is ready can be linked to irritable bowel syndrome in later life. Also bear in mind that if baby is persistently having diarrhoea it can lead to dehydration and weight loss so the risk far outweighs the benefit if you have been advised to wean to support something like weight gain. Obviously we don’t know the medical history of your baby or the reason the dr has advised to wean but If baby is otherwise healthy (good weight gain, no reflux etc) then I would do a bit of your own research.
@Ceri-Ann the first time my baby tasted food was the piccolo organic purées which our paediatrician said is too much fiber to begin with, even though was for tasting purposes. When I did wean him I did with porridge and baby rice as per his instructions and my LO poop was normal. His reflux got better due to starting solids and he is thriving overall.
@Cristina it is not an opinion. It is the official recommended guidance for all babies that they don't have any solids until they are 6 months because their digestive systems aren't developed enough & it can cause them harm starting any earlier. Also, doctors don't always know best.
@Rachel you do not know the medical history of this child so rehashing the same argument over and over is not helping. This mum is aware of the facts and can do her own research. There are certain circumstances where it is advisable, under supervision of medical professionals, to wean early so unless you have this child’s medical history and training in dietetics or paediatrics you need to stop continuing to berate this mother. If you do know the history and have the training you still need to stop because it’s unprofessional but back your statements up with evidence and support in making an informed choice Drs don’t always know best but the internet also only shows you what companies have paid for with their marketing budget
Diarrhoea is also a sign of gut issues and maybe allergy
Why feel guilty?? Food is literally just for fun until they’re 1 years old. Giving him pouches is giving him exposure to new foods and that’s all that matters. And the diarrhoea is probably his stomach getting used to foods x
