Head circumference small

I had my scan last week at 20+0 and HC is at 160.3 mm Google says ideal is 170.5mm at 20 weeks. I had a consultant do the scan for me as I was previously exposed to chicken pox.i am non -immune with no previous vaccinations.Didn't catch the virus myself but was exposed and ive been slacking off on my pregna care with low iron. I feel like it's my fault for contracting it at work and also taking the vitamins lightly . I feel soo low. This on top of the consultant ruining the gender for me.anyway, Has anybody's baby had a smaller HC but then everything was normal. They rechecked the HC measurement and told me it may be well normal but just in the lower percentile but maybe they're just being positive so I don't get anxious? I feel like it's all my fault . Rechecking in 4 weeks and now I'm starting to feel bad. The more people I tell, the more their reactions are upsetting me. Obviously everyone's trying to sympathize but I feel blehh

I’m over that then, my baby’s head is measuring 181.30mm at 20weeks 1day at the 20 week scan. She didn’t say anything about it. She said he is perfect so now I’m confused.

It really depends how they measured it based on the position of the baby. See how you get on the next scan, there is nothing else you can do. Also the vitamins aren’t protecting you from anything, don’t beat yourself about it. You can always go privately and get it checked sooner than waiting for 4 weeks. It really depends on the position of the baby and how they measured it. If they were that worried they would have rescanned in 1 week, max 2 weeks. Don’t stress x

My baby's head circumference also came out smaller but after researching I found out and sent the following to my husband. "I've looked at Baby's head circumference and it is 16.38cm which is smaller than the average. The average is 17.5cm apparently for 20 weeks. Interestingly the CRL which means crown rump length which is always measured at the first scan and determines the gestational age of the baby can have an error margin of 3 to 5 days. This is interesting as I did think that when it was decided our baby was 11 weeks and 4 days old I also counted back from when baby was actually conceived and thought baby should be younger than that at the time. It may explain the smaller head circumference as well as the fact he/she has a mother with a small head circumference." So it could be that your baby is actually younger and or that one of the parents head circumference is also quite small. For me, often hats for average adults are too big and I can wear children's hats fairly easily.

It also depends on the other measurements. For me, I was told that although the head is a bit smaller than the average, everything looked normal.

The ideal here must mean dead average. Not every baby will be on that size - if the sonographer didn’t raise an issue it’ll be fine!

Thank you ladies for replying. It's just hard not to worry. I've been having quite a few scares since the beginning of my pregnancy while my first was pretty straight forward so I'm a bit shaken with everything x

@Nic I'm sorry if I caused any confusion

@Dessy they were thinking of scanning in 2 weeks but they had to recheck my bloods so wanted to discuss the results in 4 weeks and hence pushed it to 4 weeks 😭😭

I’m just thinking is his head too big if it’s only supposed to be 170.5mm she never said he was measuring big or anything? X

Remember scans aren’t always accurate. Mistakes do happen and are so often! Keep your chin up, I am sure they just want to double check the measurements to compare how is baby growing. 🙏🏻💖

@Nic I honestly have no idea. I just googled because every body I told had such a big reaction so it got to me and I started googling and getting anxious and teary. If you're unsure best speaking to your midwife

Bear in mind these measurements are not accurate. A click slightly to one side or the other makes huge differences and sometimes they don’t have a perfectly clear outline of things to go around. I’ve had them draw the circle around the head 5 times and always get a different measurement!

I get this. My first was completely issue free and this time I’ve had bleeding, different symptoms etc. plus looking after a demanding other child. Call your midwife/dr if it will make you feel better. It’s not wasting their time. I hope you feel calmer soon!

@Nic there isn’t a ‘meant’ to be size, there’s a meant to be range. Remember there’s only a 1cm difference between those measurements! And they’re often measuring a wiggly baby! Babies can be born from 5lb to over 10lb - they can’t possibly have all been exactly the same size until birth. There’s a range :) If the sonographer said ‘perfect’ everything is fine. They don’t hide information. Don’t worry.

@Hannah thank you for the reassurance x
