Big baby/induction

So I’m 39 weeks and been told I have a big baby. I had a growth scan 2 weeks ago and was on 88th centile weighing approx 7lbs. I’ve just had another scan today and been told he’s on 95th centile weighing 8lbs 10. I was then referred to speak to the doctor about my options and felt really pressured into agreeing to an induction there and then. I was by myself so wasn’t able to speak to my husband or anything, to be honest I was just taken aback as I just expected to go for the scan and that’s it. I ended up telling her to put me on the list for induction and someone will contact me, I had a sweep in the meantime. I feel so down about it all and wish I was more clued up on everything. Does anyone have any experience/advice in this situation? I really didn’t want an induction after an awful experience with my first birth. Thanks in advance!

As far as I’m aware even though you are provisionally booked in you can still say no to the induction! Now you’ve thought about it and if you don’t want to go ahead I’d ring your midwife and say no thank you!

This happened to me with my first at 38 weeks. She was 99 percentile on the scan, but when born she was 92 percentile. I was also asked to choose there and then between having an induction the following week at 39 weeks or CSection and opted for the latter. The way they made it sound, baby was so big and I didn’t want all the steps involved in the induction and then end up with an emergency c section anyway! So I opted for CS. I felt the same- ambushed! Spent a couple days crying then read up on c sections. The day itself was quite nice and chilled. But the recovery was tough!

You can always say no! It’s not too late. The scans aren’t always 100% accurate. Its your body and your baby and you can choose to change your mind at any point if you don’t want the induction.

You can cancel - i did in my last pregnancy and have refused to book one this time. They may not like it but it's important you are happy with the choice, not them. Just an estimated big baby wouldn't be enough of a reason for me - there's a big margin of error

I had a scan at 37+3 and baby was measuring 7lbs 5, no one mentioned anything about an induction for a big baby or anything x

@Erin same! X

I had an elective yesterday due to my LB measuring on the 95th centile, was measuring 9lbs at 36 weeks, he was born yesterday 38 weeks 9lbs 1oz, my 1st section went well but this time has its problems, m

They said the same with my last 2 babies. I ended up having them 39 +6 weighing 8.1lb and 39+5 weighing 8.7lb so take it with a pinch of salt. I’m current is just under 90th centile at 36 week scan, that consultant never uttered induction and they are scanning me again in 3 weeks. Personally I think I would have declined unless they told me something wild like he was 9lb already and would be 12lb by birth. I ended up waiting 5-6 days for a bed for ARM with both went into labour on my own with the first and so wasn’t technically induced in the end and 2nd had the hormone drip again after waiting 5-6 days from ‘induction date’ for a bed xx

What type of induction are they offering?? I had a drug free induction with my first and would be happy to do that again this time. I’ve just had a scan at 36 +2 baby is approx 7lb 3 measuring just below 97th and consultant said she doesn’t want to induce so I’m just in for another scan and a sweep at 39 weeks. Tbh I am incredibly uncomfortable and due to my first being born at 39 weeks and weighing 7lb 4 I will be pushing for induction if the sweep doesn’t work. But it’s different for everyone!! If it’s not right for you, ring the hospital and cancel the induction. No one can force you it’s your body your baby and if there is no medical reason for induction I really don’t see why they’re booking you in

Hi just wanted to give you an update, I got an induction last night due to reduced movements. I got told baby was 7lbs 5 at 37+3 and baby boy was born at 39+5 and he weighed 8lbs 13. No one was ever concerned about him being big or never voiced that to me x

@Gemma they’ve not said yet, just that I’ll be contacted when they have a date. I want to speak to a consultant again because i wasn’t expecting it and was a bit taken aback by it all. No other options were discussed ie c section, it was just kind of ‘your baby is big, these are the risks to you need to be induced pretty much now’ - but also it’s a 3 day weekend so you won’t be able to do anything until Tuesday 😂
