Planned C Section conversation (UK)

Hey all šŸ‘‹ First time mom to be here and been wondering about this for a while but not finding any conclusive answer. Im 8w4d pregnant and yet to have my first scan (booked in for 4th June). I know it’s still early days but when do I let my midwife know I want to have a planned c section? I have an appointment with my midwife a few days before the scan as well, so would it make sense to bring it up then? (Provided it’s the midwife I need to inform - if it’s someone else please let me know) Feeling a bit lost about all the conversations I’m supposed to have lol

I let them know at the 8 week booking appointment so it was logged early!

@Cat oh damn I already had my booking appointment and I didn’t say anything cause I wasn’t sure (and a bit overwhelmed lol) but I guess it’s not too bad if I inform her next time prior to the scan!

Mention it, but midwife will only make a referral to the consultant and that’s it. And then you will be making the decision with a consultant. If they hesitate, they should refer you to another consultant or hospital.

You have plenty of time still to weigh up and discuss options - I ended up needing a caesarean at 42 weeks due to baby being frank breech and it all happened very calmly the following day - so it’s definitely never too late for plans to change šŸ˜…

You can literally change your birth preference up until the last week of pregnancy, so don’t worry. I’m 34 weeks and I only going through my birth plan with the midwife next week for the first time although they have written in my note my preference

I’ve had an appointment with my midwife recently 25w one and it was an appointment surrounding vaginal or a C section birth, which I was rather surprised at! Then at this appointment if I said I wanted one they’d let my consultant know so the consultant could arrange an extra appointment regarding this. Not sure if it’s the same all over the uk

They don't really need a decision till your 3rd trimester but the earlier the better really.

I let them know at my booking appointment at 10 weeks but didn’t have a meeting with consultant until 16 weeks, she just gave me information then I had a proper consultation at 32 weeks and signed forms and got my date x

I told my midwife around 28 weeks so don’t worry you have time. They send you to a consultant. My consultant was fab and she ended up doing my surgery herself šŸ˜‚

Thank you all! It’s really reassuring to know I didn’t ā€œmissā€ having the conversation or anything. I’ll probably mention it to her in my next appointment and see what she says x

Let the midwife know at your first appointment. Later you will speak about your birthing plan. Xx

@Sophie-Jayne I’ve already had my booking appointment and I didn’t mention anything then but I have another appointment in a few weeks before my first scan.. will let her know then!
