UK parental leaves

Just wondering how is everyone else planning on using the parental leaves (unpaid)? In terms of at what age do you plan on start using them? And how many weeks do you plan to use per year?

I only intend to use it if i have to e.g my baby is ill, otherwise I won't be using it at all.

@Robyn thank you for the comment, I noticed they are not very popular choices by a lot of parents, could it Becuase that they are unpaid? x

@Robyn how does it work? Can I use it anytime? What is the procedure? Also, does it need to be consecutive days?

You have to evidence it's to look after the child - i think you can have a total of 4 weeks a year until they're 18. You have to give your employer 21 days notice too before you intend to take it. https://www.gov.uk/parental-leave/entitlement

So for me my company give me 5 paid days which I will use for childcare issues/illness. Otherwise I won't use unpaid I will use my holiday for. My partner gets no paid parental leave and also uses holiday rather than unpaid leave. X

I haven’t thought about it until seeing this post but I would guess, summer holidays would be a great time for parents with children in school.

@Ann-Marie that’s wrong, parental leave can be used for anything family related, even simply spending more time with your kids. The overview page of the link you provided confirms this. The only evidence you may have to provide is proof that you have children

Didn’t even know this was a thing! I wouldn’t take unpaid leave unless I had an emergency though. My employer will allow last minute booking of annual leave for unexpected childcare like illness and working from home is an option. Unless something drastically changed, couldn’t really afford to take time off unpaid.

There's dependency leave and parental leave, both are very different and used for different things.

@Katya may be something in my work policy that talks about proving it ... I know i read it somewhere, just can't remember where lol :)
