Reflux - running out of ideas

We are struggling so much with reflux and colic. He’s so unhappy most of the time, won’t be put down, only naps for about 15 mins unless he’s being held and when I try to burp him after a feed, he absolutely screams uncontrollably. This is what I have tried: - cutting out dairy - different feeding positions - colief, infacol, gripe water - Oestepath - Baby Gaviscon (didn’t work, made him incredibly constipated) - Currently on a high dose of Omeprazole The omeprazole seemed to work for a week and now we’re completely back to square one. I have a little boy who is 2.5 and really starting to struggle with the constant screaming, and I just feel like I can never just give him my attention any more and it breaks my heart. Any suggestions, please let me know 🙏🏽

This was exactly the same as my first baby. We discovered he had a terrible tongue tie after we were told by multiple different doctors and midwives that he didn’t have one! To make matters worse, once it was cut it reattached and had to be cut again! Once that was sorted, the reflux improved pretty much overnight. Have you had him checked for a tongue tie? If not, please look at a qualified tongue tie practitioner - they are the only professionals who are qualified to check and carry out a procedure if necessary! Xx

Have you tried carobel for the reflux? It works wonders for my little boy. I am formula feeding though unsure if you are and it can sometimes make him constipated but you can create the texture so it’s not too thick but thicker than normal. You’re doing great though and keep fighting for answers and help, you’ll both get there🫶🏻x

@Alysha I swear by carabel too!!

We started 2 scoops to 5 ounces but today upped to 6 ounces and she’s fine with the consistency xx

Hey. I am not sure if you have facebook but there is a group on there called ‘kendamums’ which has ALOT of advice re reflux and colic babies. My daughter suffers from reflux. The group has helped me alot whenever I have needed advice. How old is your baby? Is baby exclusively breastfed? How is their latch ie is it a wide latch or shallow, coming on and off etc? Alot of this can be down to a tongue tie too which my LO had. X

@Courtney agreed, most aren’t qualified to check tongue ties and the NHS will check for free but prioritise breastfed babies and provide less aftercare.

My baby is exactly the same, literally will not sleep during the day and get so hysterical upset that nothing will settle him it’s so hard when you don’t know what’s wrong 😫 x

Can you try carobel? We only use 1 scoop for 5oz and it works a dream xx

@Alysha where can you get this from x

My baby was exactly the same up until 4 days ago. I bottle feed and I changed his normal aptamil milk to Comfort Aptamil and my life has absolutely changed!!!! He naps 2-3 hours every time, no more colic and constipation and he is able to fart just fine and it’s not uncomfortable! My baby was spitting up all the time, sleeping 20 min here and there, in pain trying to fart and constipated, crying all the time it was a nightmare, the health visitor said it would take 2 weeks to clear the old milk from his body but in 2 days he was another baby completely!! He is so calm and sleeping well and feeding well, it’s unbelievable

@Abbie Amazon or a pharmacy x

@Farihah hey, do you know how I can get this checked through the NHS? My baby is breastfed but there has never been any mention of checking for tongue tie!

@Beth you would have to ask your health visitor to refer you but depending on babies age they only do referrals up to a certain age. I would really push them to refer you, NHS waiting times can be very long though so it depends on if you are willing to wait too. We had to go private, easier to get an appointment sooner but only difficult part is obviously paying for it yourself.

This is pretty much my baby as well. She’s breastfed and has reflux, and I cut out dairy and soy. She’s also on omeprazole. Is your milk letdown really fast? Mine is and this can make it worse. Side lying feeding helps a little bit but mostly she just cries a lot. I just started trying probiotics and hope this will help after reading good reviews. Also I’ve heard if you drink fennel and chamomile tea this could help baby as well.

My baby is the same :(

you haven’t mentioned it above, however can i ask what his poo is like? is it hard, runny? does he vomit? personally i wouldn’t ever give carobel to my baby again, it made him sooo constipated, it was horrible. If you was going to use a thicker, I’ve heard magic mix is amazing x

My baby was similar and we swapped him to cow and gate comfort and stopped trying everything else and touch wood it’s worked 🤞🏼

@Jennifer he’s constipated constantly, he goes frequently goes up to 7 days without a dirty nappy and needs the use of laxatives to help him to go. He brings up a lot of his feeds with vomit!

@Courtney Hey, thank you for this, the more I have looked into this now, the more I think this is a strong possibility! How old was your little one when they had theirs cut?

@Beth has your baby been tested for CMPA?

@Jennifer not tested but I went dairy free about 5 weeks ago just in case

@Beth if you’re breastfeeding, it’s hard to try figure out what it could be. Could literally be anything you’re eating x

@Harriet hey Harriet how long did it take you to notice a difference on comfort x

@Beth with breastfeeding you would also need to cut out soya and beef too if you suspect an allergy. Reflux is caused by either air, over feeding or an allergy. Xx

You literally are living the same life as me. My daughter is 9 weeks & exactly the same. My son is missing out on so much because she’s just crying constantly/ is always on me. Unfortunately for me I’m living this for a second time as my son was similar but he was bottle fed & we found carobel & dairy free formula worked for us. I’m currently in limbo as I’m not sure what the solution is & ent on nhs told me she didn’t have a tongue tie clear enough to cut (although I was referred in by infant feeding team). Just wanted you to know you’re not alone ❤️

@Jane did they explain what they meant by ‘not clear enough’? They either have a tie or they don’t. Did you ever get your first baby checked for a tie - as they are often hereditary. It could be that baby has tension in the body. How was birth and how was baby born? It’s very common with c section babies especially. If it is a case of body tension, baby will benefit from seeing an osteopath to release the tension along with oral exercises at home.

@Farihah she said that she’d have to cut the muscle to release it. I’m sure both my daughter & son had one too but I was a FTM and didn’t know who to ask. She doesn’t seem to have tension & had a fairly straightforward delivery this time (be it almost 4 weeks early).

@Jane it’s not your fault. We need trained staff who specialise in this area on the wards after birth so that women can get more help with feeding and ties. It just needs more awareness really. Some babies can just have a thick tongue which looks like thick muscle. Oral play with thin it out over time. So stretches in the mouth would help with that. That’s what we did with our second.

Give carobel a try, only thing that eased reflux for our little girl. But it doesn't stop it, just makes it less severe
