Came to say the above, except I thought it was 4 weeks
Thanks both. It’s 36 weeks, so I’ve carefully planned my leave to ensure that doesn’t happen (checked the policy before I arranged my dates).
I don’t know if your obstetrician will issue one, but maybe speak to your workplace before you panic: my workplace were very understanding with how difficult it is to get hold of GPs and so I did have a few days without an official certificate - when I got it the GP backdated it and everything was fine x
If you mean like a consultant for another issue then no they won't, I had some time off when we had lots of concerns about babies size and was being seen by the small baby specialist consultant very regularly, my sick note originally came from the GP and I asked the consultant during the appointment to extend it for me or do me a fresh one and he said they can't do that, it's a GP thing. However the GP can very easily backdate a sick note and do this regularly, mine was shut for 4 days during Easter weekend at this time, I called earlier then the end date and they said I'd have to call back after the end date, which was into the closure dates, they said it will be back dated easily and my employer was fine with that, I just let them know in advance. Hope that helps!
The GP will just backdate it for you and your workplace will have to be patient for it, they'll be used to it no doubt.
Just flagging if you are off work sick with a pregnancy related issue any time 6 weeks before your due date your employer can trigger your maternity leave to start early
