Cleaning second hand stuff?

Hi lovelies, I am 29 weeks pregnant with our boy and starting to aggressively nest 😂 We have been super lucky to have been passed along tons of stuff including baby rockers/Moses baskets etc that are all in really good condition. I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips on what to use to clean/disinfect them (mainly fabric parts that can't be thrown into the washer) that is safe for baby? Thanks I'm advance!

Make a spray with Milton tablets

I can't lie, my bouncer i couldn't get the cover off so I just used anti bacterial dettol wipes... Im 31 weeks so gonna go over again with Milton before hes born x

I've bought quite a lot of baby stuff second hand over the years. Anything that is fabric goes in the washing machine on a 40° cotton cycle (some things I put on a 60°). Haven't destroyed anything so far! If it definitely can't go in the machine (like things that are riveted to the frame) then I'd soak in hot water with washing powder then give it a good scrub and a really thorough rinse. Depending on what it is, I'd also probably give it a soak in a dilute bleach solution (cold water as heat breaks down the sodium hypochlorite which is the active ingredient) then rinse well with hot water.

I'd generally stay away from antibacterial type products such as Dettol laundry cleanser or the spray on sanitisers you can get. The active ingredient is generally benzalkonium chloride which is very stubborn to remove from fabrics and not great for health, it's a known skin irritant for example. It's also horrible for the environment as it's specifically designed not to break down which means it ends up in rivers (because it's not removed/broken down in the sewage treatment process) where it kills natural bacteria and upsets the balance of the ecosystem.

@Hayley that's a good idea will definitely try this!

@Katie thank you! This is great advice, will give it a go. Just want to give everything a freshen up before baby comes 😊
