My diet is pretty good, once diagnosed I switched to wholegrain, eating a lot more vegetables, cut back my portion sizes when eating anything carby like potatoes, cereal. I monitored closely at the start to see what I was getting away with and what would cause a spike and nothing was causing a spike then, when I was working there were days where my diet was bad, had to eat out as I had to travel for work for a little while and I was still fine. I admit there were days I did indulge on sugary items and yet I was still okay but now I can't even eat a roast chicken dinner with mash and veg and it put me up to 7.8 and something like that would never spike me over 7
any talks of insulin or metformin? a lot of women just can't control their numbers without one or the other, and that's okay.
No, i even got away with not going on insulin when I got the steroids. And it was never an issue before, the diabetes midwife was impressed with my readings. Something has changed for me to be more sensitive to it now out of no where. Maybe getting signed off work has affected it, I would have been on my feet a lot before. I'll see what she says at my next appointment. Just disappointing to get this far doing really well without medication. I hoped I wouldn't need to go on it at all
As your pregnancy progresses, the further along you go, the readings can change and get higher x
Okay that's what I was wondering, thanks. I just have to be a bit stricter on my diet and hope for the best, would like to get through this without insulin
Hi Kaylie, I’m also living in castlebar. I had GD with my second and it was only discovered around the 35 week mark. I was tested at 28 weeks and was fine so I’m thinking it must get worse as the pregnancy goes on which would make sense with what’s happening with you. Mine was very mild at that stage and it was just diet too but I did find the more I tried to follow the recommended diet, the more I would spike. I used to be able to eat a bar of chocolate and be fine but a slice of the wholemeal bread would tip me over! 🤷♀️
Your hormones can change the later you get in pregnancy, I was first diagnosed at 28 weeks and could get away with a surprising amount, then by 32 weeks I really had to limit / weigh out carbs and pair everything. I managed to stay diet controlled by never eating a ‘solo carb’ and checking the total fat + protein grams on anything pre-made was more than total carbohydrates. My fitness pal was quite handy just to track, it’s different for everyone but I was generally okay with 30g carbs per meal and at least 30g combined fat/protein per meal.
Thank you that's helpful. I spoke with the diabetic nurse today and she thinks I'm a little more carb sensitive now. She's not overly concerned yet with my numbers. She will keep an eye on them over the next week and go from there so I just need to limit my carbs, keep note of what I ate when I get a high reading and hopefully it'll be okay then
what does your diet look like?
