Really struggling

I got diagnosed recently with GD. I was told to go on a strict low GI diet. I have other health conditions which means that some of the food I can’t eat. I am really struggling. Like honestly I know this sounds dramatic but I am so hungry and emotional. I feel like I am the definition of hangry. Any advice on what you are eating and how you are coping with sweet cravings would be greatly appreciated. The midwives keep calling me to tell me that my readings are awful but people on here are telling me they are good. I felt they were good but now I just feel defeated and I don’t know how I’m going to do this for the next three months. Obvs my baby is the most importantly thing in the world. I have attached my readings for yesterday and below is what I ate. Breakfast: Rye and sunflower sourdough with peanut butter. Lunch: Dark Rye Ryviya with cheese and tomato. Dinner: steak and cheese stuffed red bell pepper.

If the readings are green then they are within range. Looks like the same app my hospital trust used x

Follow the glucose goddess on instagram. She’s just done a channel 4 documentary but it’s all about helping to lower your readings, it may support xx

Those readings look good, did they give you a guideline to stay between? I know after food the highest mine should be is 7.7 and I can’t remember my fasted numbers off the top of my head. I am feeling the same though like I can’t eat anything and just feel starving and emotional 😢 so sorry you are feeling the same! hoping some others can shed some light on stuff. The information I’ve been reading seems to say pairing protein with anything is supposed to help a lot

I was advised below 7 two hours after meals and below 5.5 before meals is ideal so your numbers look good to me. I struggled mentally too you’re definitely not alone 🩷 for sweetness I really enjoy the Hartleys sugar free and 10 cal jellies ! They’re delicious. I also enjoy Granny Smith apple chopped up with some crunchy peanut butter to dip in. I use the sunpat brand which does have a little sugar added but Iv always coped well with it. I also like sugar free ice poles and I don’t deprive myself of chocolate. My medical team told me not to ! She said if you want it, eat it. Just make sure your drink plenty of water and go for a walk after it and you’ll be fine. But I don’t always walk after and i haven’t had a high reading yet. The chocolate I will have is the 80% dark chocolate mini bars from Aldi, freddos and mini maltesers reindeer. Also the chocolate protein mousse pudding from Aldi. Anytime I have chocolate I either pair it with a cheese string first or have it straight after …

Continued .. Lunch or dinner. Also for a sugar hit il have a glass of diet fizzy juice with ice and sip it through a straw. I love Coke Zero with lemon just now. That alone sometimes curbs the craving.

This is my second time dealing with GD. What helps me, granted not perfect, is starting with keto recipes and then modifying to add back a little bit of carbs. For sweetener, I use erythritol in smoothies, chia seed pudding, or baking. Nuts with dried fruit (4 parts nuts and 1 part dried fruit) mix helps as well. But honestly the best way to get over sweets is to suffer for 4 to 5 days and then cravings will subside. Filling up on protein and fat also helps to feel fuller and not crave sweets. For instance, it helps me to put butter, cheese, and egg on toast for breakfast. If I just do bread and cheese, my sugar may go up higher than if add the extra fat and protein. Drinking a glass or two of water after meals and/or a 15 minute walk within half an hour of a meal all help as well. Real Food for Gestational Diabetes is a great book with lots of advice and has some meal options. "No naked carbs" is my biggest take away from that book. I

For meal ideas, here's what I had today: breakfast veggie and bacon egg bake with cheddar cheese, half of toast with butter and coffee with cream; lunch was keto chicken salad (but used Waitrose organic mayo and added 1/4 of granny smith apple) on BFree sweet potato wrap with avocado; snack: ended up eating another wrap but usually do a keto peanut butter smoothie with chia seeds; for dinner we had shrimp tacos with guacamole, cabbage in lime juice, coriander/cilantro, Greek yogurt on one BFree sweet potato wrap. Sometimes I would also do taco (chicken, fish, or shrimp) on a greens mix and/or with microwaved riced cauliflower.

i’ve noticed that my hospital mainly focuses on fasting readings. which in your case is 6.1 when it should be 5.2 or under. if my whole day readings are green but my fasting is high they will increase my insulin by 2 units. (if my fasting levels are high 3 days in the row)
