Unpopular opinion: I don’t understand how people can’t cook. Everyone can cook 🌚

Laughing but also serious so don’t cry pls. Explain to me what does not being able to cook mean. Like you can’t follow a recipe? Or you can’t create your own? Because the latter is 100% understandable. But like if you watch a video..? no?

Folks are just lazy if they have basic reading comprehension skills there's no excuse not to be able to cook they're just not used to staying on tasks they aren't very interested in someone always did their chores for them and now they aren't willing to learn

Some people find following recipes really overwhelming cos of all the steps or having things going on at once. They're usually fine with things from the freezer or reheating cos that's just a one step, put in the oven or whatever then take out and eat but anything beyond is too much. If they haven't been taught to cook they don't feel comfortable enough with how to combine things to create meals without. I personally can cook mainly without recipes but I know people who can't.

@Jo yeah I think lack of interest is a big one!

I'm usually pretty good! any time i do mess up, it's usually because i forgot to put a timer on and forgot i was even cooking 🤦🏼‍♀️

Anyone can cook but not everyone can be a good cook 😂 I find baking more difficult personally because things have to be exact

My mom can’t cook, and it’s because she doesn’t care to. If someone is motivated, they will learn.

I think that in general cooking basic things are pretty easy like eggs, bacon, most meats, fish but if you ask me to make a pie, lasagna, a pot pie, bread from scratch -pizza that’s not something that I’ll know how to do without looking at video following someone else’s lead. Granted those things may be easy to make but because I’ve never personally made them I wouldn’t know what I’m doing. I just like to follow instructions when it comes to cooking I read them and take them seriously lol or look at videos etc whereas someone like my mom wouldn’t need to do that . She cooked for longer than I have over the course of her life and was accustomed to it. Cooking is also not something that I really like to do I’d prefer not to but I’m also okay with doing it and can make things taste good when i follow instructions or when Im familiar with cooking certain things previously like eggs 🫠

I can cook but have trauma from an oven that I’m currently working through to be comfortable with an oven. Also for me I struggle allot to comprehend reading instructions so I tend to freehand unless some can read me the instructions. (I understand it better when I hear it verse reading.)

I had a Roomate who didn’t cook she would just microwave everything or order takeout. She literally didn’t understand how recipes worked and was afraid to boil water.

I say I can’t cook referring to I’ve messed up boxed foods more times than I can count such as Mac n cheese , hamburger helper even spaghetti etc . I can’t make from scratch . I’ve gotten better at easy meals ofc over time and recently was gifted a beginner style cook book and I’ll use videos to help me fully understand what I’m doing too but my husband makes things from scratch

@Donna I think that makes a lot of sense. Some people can’t boil pasta or make a basic meat and veg. I think to bake a pie or do like extensive baking/cooking, you just gotta enjoy it.

@Keyara can I ask what you struggle with? Because it’s not the reading itself, but the following of the instructions in real time? Maybe videos are your thing

@Jill I would easily be 280 lbs with high cholesterol if I lived that life

This made me chuckle/laugh a bit. It made me think about my mother in law’s husband . She swears up and down and give him a praise or something for knowing how to cook Hamburger Helper.. Anyone can read/follow instructions off from a box.. 😅 I don’t really know how to cook like that but that’s where YouTube, TikTok, Google, Pinterest come into play. I’ve learned a lot from it and my husband always hype me up. Even if I try to do something new and it doesn’t come out the way I wanted to, he still supports me 🥺🫶🏼

@Jill lol one time as a teen I boiled water to make tea and I didn’t want the string to my tea packet inside the water so I hung it over the edge of the pot without turning the stove off and that was nearly a fire 😬 she had a reason to worry 🤣

I couldn’t cook until a few months ago. I knew I could easily follow a recipe but I had no interest in it. I’m a really fussy eater so I saw no point in spending loads of time in the kitchen stressing and following a recipe when I’d prefer to just have beans on toast then a “proper meal” anyways. I can cook now because I wanted to make my daughter meals when she started weaning

My boyfriend can cook basically anything from scratch. He looks up a recipe to check but he is usually close enough. Yet for some reason he burns canned beans, his boxed food never tastes right, and he can not make rice. There is no way thats a skill issue, so I assume some people are just broken. Then theres people who just haven't tried.

@Carlene Langley omg 😭 one time when I was like 14 I was boiling eggs and then we left the house and forgot and my neighbor called my mom frantically because they heard a huge pop in my house. Turns out the eggs exploded all over the kitchen and the pot burned. thankfully my neighbor saved us from a potential house fire because they had a key. Imagine a fire from boiling eggs 😭

@Katelynn 😂😂😂 that’s hilarious actually. But I really learned to make rice by my mom telling me to wash the rice, put it in the pot, add salt, butter/oil, and water like an inch above the rice, cover and put it on very low and forget about it for like 10-15 mins.

Everyone can cook, but not everyone can cook well. Coming from a chef that has 8yrs of culinary experience. I’ve seen people inside and outside of the professional kitchens do some strange stuff, like refusing to wash meat before using or even just not understanding how different spices come together. My dad for example can not cook well. Doesn’t know how long certain meats should cook, will not watch the food while it’s cooking, uses spices that clash with each other. It’s a skill that can be learned, but not everyone has the skill innately.

Honestly cooking is not my bag like I’ve tried trust me.

Everyone can cook because it’s a requirement to live but not everyone is good at it which is fine. That’s why when I hear men say they can’t cook and they need a woman who can I know they are just lazy morons. I’ve heard people say they can’t even boil water and I know they are just weaponizing their incompetence.

They haven’t been taught recipes or don’t have the skill to do it without burning something just like driving id say. My fiancé cannot cook off the top of his head or do it without burning or asking questions he’s kinda clueless in the kitchen but his mom didn’t cook so he was never shown he just needs to learn. He can make ramen and eggs but I think his adhd makes it hard to follow recipes lol. I actually have been teaching him to cook overtime out of fear of something ever happening to me and he not be able to cook dinner lol.

A lot of people are doing their best with what they have. I think it’s a parent’s responsibility to give their kids the basics (how to make eggs, chop veggies, sautee like onions and meat etc) but I imagine if all of that is foreign it’s a kinda overwhelming learning curve

I’ll readily admit that I’m a recipe follower, not a good cook. I can follow a recipe just fine but I’m not competent enough to throw a meal together myself or eyeball things like most people. I guess I just never learnt, my parents are bad cooks, they buy everything ready made so I never saw proper cooking growing up, then I worked in hospitality for years so I ate at work and never cooked at home, having a child really forced me in to having to cook.

@Katelynn me too! I’m a pretty good cook and often use recipes as a base then freestyle it, however I CANNOT cook rice! Even following instructions, it either ends up mush or I burn it 🤷‍♀️ I’ll make you a boeuf bourguignon or lasagne from scratch, but don’t ask for rice!

I'm really motivated to cook because I want to be able to eat something good every day and learning how to cook my favorite foods saves a lot of $$ lol There are instances where people genuinely can't cook, like if they don't own an oven or range to cook on or are disabled and their kitchen isn't accessible. Thats usually what comes to mind when people say they can't cook

Dude are you that chef from Ratatouille?

@Haley this made me cackle

@Sam lmao but what goes wrong!

@Monét I wish I knew 😂

I find it difficult and get really stressed about it, I don’t like anyone saying it’s because I’m lazy. I get really flustered especially if something has lots of steps or it’s all about the timing. We all have our strengths and skills, cooking isn’t one of mine. I would get by if I need to and did live on my own for about a year and didn’t starve (much to my family’s surprise) but I just hate it. My partner loves cooking so he does that and I do the lions share of the housework instead. Works for us

@Natalie this is me! I am that person

@Char my husband is too

Most people have access to internet/ their phone. So it does confuse me when they say they don't know how. Cooking takes practice. It takes effort. Everyone should learn how to cook because we all need to eat. Don't know how to boil water? Literally Google it. Don't know how to make plain rice? Google it. Don't know how to boil an egg? Google it. My mother didn't teach me how to cook. My grandma also didn't teach me but I spent time in the kitchen watching her when I did my hw. As an adult I did a lot of googling and practicing.

I can't cook. Was never taught. When I follow a recipe it never works out. Just can't do it!
