Food!!

I am a nervous wreck with this weaning process🤦‍♀️ I started on pouches/jars as i was abit clueless and deffo overthought it all. But now she still has pouches/jars cuz any fresh food i give her she wont touch hardly whereas jars she’ll eat the lot.. so my question is… what can i give her?! She still hasnt had toast as i just dont get how she eats toast???? How does she eat what i eat when surely chicken doesnt just melt away/soften up enough to break up in her mouth??

Joint the BLW warning group on Facebook, it helps with how you meant to cut everything up and make it safe for babies. Babies jaws are incredibly strong at nine months old. My baby girl has no teeth but she can buy off things and as long as it’s modified safely she can swallow it. Toast she will just suck and gram and when it comes off, she’ll swallow it. Honestly, the Facebook group is really handy.

Their gums are hard and they’re very dribbly so it just gets mushed up chewing and sometimes they swallow a chunk but that’s ok. Chicken will soften I promise

Solid starts is a helpful app to see how best to prepare food for their age which helped give me confidence. It's surprising what they can chew chicken and toast are both now firm favorites. But it's ok to be nervous maybe start with steamed veg or softer things like banana and avocado and work your way up

It’s honestly amazing what their little gums can do! I definitely recommend solid starts to see how to prepare food for her and join some BLW groups. Once you move past the nervousness of it all, it’s really good seeing them enjoy foods x

Try putting some of the contents of a pouch on her plate with a preloaded spoon alongside some finger foods, that way she’s got her safe food to eat and it might encourage her to pick up some other foods x

Their gums are quite hard, I recommend the solid starts app too. When I give my little one toast I cut it into strips of four

I do a mix of pouches (the lumpier ones) and lots of finger foods. Even if stuff doesn’t get eaten and ends on the floor, she’s tried and gets something!

Done blw since 6 months and it is soo easy now, watching how they map their mouth, push stuff out, chew it’s amazing! Start with egg strips, weetabix balls, soft veg, melty sticks etc

I was the same and gave purees only and lumpier foods but recently giving thicker textures like today she had fish and rice mashed together. It was amazing to see her eat it all !

Blend up a beef stew or mince and carrots 🥕 into a smooth consistency. They love that. Also baked sweet potato 🥔

@Jolene it sounds like mum wants to move away from blending and purées x

My son completely rejected BLW for the first 2 months of weaning, I offered finger foods at every meal and he just really didn’t get on with the texture so we started with puree and worked up to mash, but kept offering finger foods alongside it. I know it’s not ideal but melty sticks/wafers were like our gateway finger foods 😆 like bland things he could suck on, it might be an idea to start with something like that? He’s now trying a much wider range of finger foods and does love toast (still disgusted with a lot of it though I won’t lie!)

Thankyou so much everyone!!! 🥰🥰🥰 Deffo going to try some of the apps and try and put my fear aside. I was so excited when she got to 6 months and then all the fear hit at once🤦‍♀️ Thankyou tho ladies cant wait to try some stuff youve all recommended 🫶🫶🫶

Mine loves toast, she sucks it to death. I still puree or make lumpy purees. She is not overly keen on whole foods but we are getting there

Something I recommend is to allow your baby to put teethers etc into their mouth, this helps push their gag reflex back. My LB hardly gags due to this. If they start gagging they build a negative association with food and will most likely refuse finger foods

All I have to say personally is that you know your baby better than anyone else. All these food groups and mom police on the Internet get a lot of moms scared. I was one of them up until when I took him on holiday to meet my mom for the first time and realised that he can actually eat 🤷🏾‍♀️ wish I just followed my instincts rather than people making up rules. He's now soon to be a year old, and he's eating it all. Start with purees, if you can make it yourself better, I used to them myself, it gives you peace of mind knowing what you are actually feeding your baby, the next stage to that for us was to let him experiment with steam vegs and fruits, just put them on his tray and let him play with it, touch it and then eventually eat it. He now has all we eat without salt/sugar and currently on cow's milk, so I can vouch for MY path, of course do you, as again it's your baby, don't ever feel judge, don't be scared as you wouldn't do anything to arm your own child and lastly it is not a competition 🩷
