Weaning

Does anyone else’s baby hold solid foods in their mouth? I’m trying to move my baby away from purées and have always offered puree and finger food, but every single time he has a finger food that doesn’t dissolve in his mouth he just stores it in his cheeks like a chipmunk. It was cute at first but he refuses to chew it, to spit it out, or try and swallow it, and I know it isn’t recommended to fish it out in case I push it into his throat. He’ll hold it in his mouth for a good 5-10 minutes and then start getting fussy. I feel like I can’t move him or take him out of his high chair in case he chokes. I’m genuinely at a loss on what to do because nine times out of ten he doesn’t clear it out of his mouth himself, I either have to help (again, I know it’s not recommended) or wait a long time for him to finally cough it out of his mouth. Help 😂

Just to add, he will chew it when it first goes in his mouth, but it’s like he gives up.

Have you tried giving a drink so he swallows it? Or maybe start by giving soft easy to swllow? My daughter does this sometimes she’s like a hamster but she does swallow it or she has water and swallows it X

Yes, my son keeps all the food on his tongue 🤪 and then demand I put more in his mouth. Sometimes I check and it's still there 20 minutes later until I have to get my finger and scoop it out - I bend my finger into a c shape so I don't push it further back into his throat.

@connie yes, he used to be really good at drinking water but now every time I offer he just turns his head away so I can’t do that either 😩

@Julia that’s what I have to do and I’m so scared of pushing it into his throat, but he just won’t spit it out. I’ve tried modelling spitting or sticking my tongue out but he’s not having it 😂 the only things he actually swallows are things like banana, watermelon etc. Anything else is being stored away in his cheeks 😂
