Tantrums

My 17 month old is terrible lately. He is constantly throwing tantrums, and he throws everything. He has even started banging his head on anything from doors, tables, floors and me! It's so embarrassing when we are out, and he does it. I've asked the nursery if he's like it there and they said no. I feel like I'm failing him because he only seems to do it with me. I've tried the calm approach and not going to lie the shouting approach too. I'm struggling to keep calm and not shout because it's just so draining and frustrating. I just don't know what else to do with him. Is this normal behaviour? When should I worry? I'm currently 24 weeks pregnant which isn't helping and I'm scared he will hurt the baby when it arrives if I don't get a handle on the tantrums now. I understand some children go through this stage but I haven't seen a child like this! He's like a wild animal.

My son is 17 months and started head banging etc at around 15 months. I literally just ignore the behaviour and try and distract him - I usually look out the window and say “look at the birds” or something like that (he’s bird mad 🤣) you’re not failing him! It’s a completely normal behaviour, it’s such a difficult age where they’re trying to communicate but can’t verbalise things so they resort to head banging. Distraction has really worked for me! Xx

He doesn’t know how to express his feelings and that’s the only way he knows how. You just have to sit with him and let him feel his feelings until he stops or as the comment above says try and distract him. You won’t be able to ‘get a handle on his tantrums’ until he’s about 5 unfortunately.

Please don’t take that he only acts out with you, I see it as it’s your there safe space to share they’re emotions with, they know you’ll take care of them and help them feel better x
