More scans and checks i ended up on insulin because nothing was helping my morning fasting levels and also not all GD babys are huge my baby was born weighing 5lb13oz
Sticking to the diet and having to poke your finger for your blood sugar levels aren't fun. But remember - it's not forever, as soon as that baby pops out you can go right back to your usual diet. I basically had all my cravings day 1 while still at the hospital as soon as the kiddos were born.
Hi! I found this incredibly useful - https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/gestational-diabetes-diagnosis/ It has very to to date advice on diet - it’s not to restrictive either as you can pair foods/ change the order in which you eat your meal so you don’t get big sugar spikes. A short walk after a meal does wonders for lowering sugar levels as well. But overall it’s not too difficult to manage, I needed to take a small dose of insulin at night as fasting sugars came up high no matter what I did. Hope it all goes well for you!
I had gestational diabetes and was referred to see a fetal specialist/dietitian. The dietitian wasn't very helpful, she didn't seem very competent but I was familiar with a diabetic diet because of my dad and I delivered a perfectly healthy beautiful girl at 39w 5d, 6.1 lbs. I cut down on carbs/ ate more protein and fiber rich foods, walked 15mins or longer after every meal. It was difficult sometimes especially after i fractured my toe but doable. Oh and I logged my sugar 4 times a day.
But my problem with gestational diabetes wasn't the condition itself, it was the doctors. They tried to scare me saying all crazy stuff like a giant baby, fetal demise, emergency c section etc, when my sugar was perfectly controlled.
Thank you all so much 🙏❤️
I had to alter my eating habits. I called it the “charcuterie board diet” and take insulin. Was seeing the specialist weekly to give them my log of finger sticks, get an US which I didn’t mind cuz I enjoyed seeing him in there as much as I could. They said because of it, they were going to induce me at 39 weeks and I went into labor 4 days before. Like everyone above said, it’s temporary. When he was born, he had to have I forgot how many normal heel sticks to make sure that he was good with his sugars too.
So I was told all sorts of things. All of which may be true but none turned out to be the case for me. I was told I didn't fit the profile for GD as I'm slim. But I was 34 with my first and I'm Asian- both aspects = higher risk for GD. My son was born average size but within 2 weeks went to 99th percentile for everything and stayed that way until age 3. They had us go through some traumatic blood testing appts- turns out nothing was wrong with him, he was just a chunky roly poly baby and toddler who is a healthy, slim (albeit very tall) 8 year old today. Just do your best to keep to a healthy diet and exercise as recommended by your nutritionist, cheat days are fine just have 2 spoons of ice cream not 2 scoops!
Instead of pricking yourself to test you can get a permanent needle installed under your skin and scan it with an app. https://www.freestyle.abbott/uk-en/products/freestyle-libre-3.html
