I found that doing a few first aid lessons/courses worked for me. Knowing what to do made me panic less. Also learning the difference between gagging and choking was surprising and well worth knowing. It's helped me to not panic at every noise and be aware of when to worry.
How old is baby? And I done a paediatric first aid course which definitely helped. I also started with melty sticks as they melted easily in her mouth before moving onto really really soft veg x
First aid course was fab. They also showed us the difference between coughing up food and actual choking. Coughing on food is good for weaning babies as it teaches them to chew their food. I honestly think if I hadn’t done the first aid course I would have panicked very time there was a splutter
Not gonna lie it is scary in the beginning but as time went on I learned to trust my girl and she just tends to projectile vomit instead of choke so I have a whole other set of issues to worry about there
You get past it as you watch them eat and learn what they can handle. You can start with relatively easy foods like avocado, egg, squished berries, oatmeal, things that are easy to eat, for practice. There are crisps for babies that practically melt in the mouth but are big enough for baby to practice chewing. They just get better with time, and as you learn what they can handle you become more confident. You should still watch carefully of course, but as they become more proficient you can confidently give them foods with relative ease. You also don't have to rush it. You don't have to give baby an entire steak to gnaw on at 7 months old, and it's perfectly fine to hold off on some foods you aren't comfortable with, there's plenty of variety of low-risk to choose from.
