I was just reading those, and I never took debate class but is this in it? I would’ve liked debate class if so lol maybe that’s just me coming from a home that argued a lot 🤣
Particularly error in assigning causation
I am currently learning more about them now. To be honest it wasnt anything I learned in school growing up. My husband and someone in my homeschool group was talking about them recently. Ironically my husband was talking about a fallacy that the person in the homeschool group used against me. Tbh the way I experienced it felt like a form of shutting down. Basically like a total cop out move.
@Anna that’s pretty much what they do. The person acts like it’s a “huzzah! Take that! End of discussion!” type of statement and it’s difficult to counter because at first glance it seems to make sense. A lot of political talking points use these types of fallacies.
@Heidi these are foundational in debate class. Also making sure your statements are based on truth and support your argument.
@Tara I hate the ad hominem attack. I find a lot of people call me old when they don’t like my points. When people use the other ones I can sometimes give them the benefit of the doubt that they just don’t know, but this one is pretty intentional. The silver lining is that when they start focusing on me instead of the topic, it’s clear they can’t refute my points, lol.
@Genevieve Ah yes, the good old failed point fallback. Pretty transparent though, you're right
@Genevieve it's been a minute since I've seen someone pull out the "well you're old" card out on you. It makes me laugh because if I don't I'll rage. Just say you can't make a point....
@Zainab🗝️ I don’t even think I look that old 🤷🏼♀️😅 I was blocked by a bunch of the “well, you’re old so shut up!” crowd when I dared to say it was not okay to send step kids away from their home (during Christmas) when a new baby comes home.
@Genevieve I think I remember that. I do recall a post about sending away her step kids for the first couple months of her baby's life....we didn't have very popular opinions on that one lol.
Very interesting that “yes, I try to avoid” is winning because the comments section anywhere on this app tells me so different
@Zainab🗝️ I think it was only technically week, but the parents alternated weeks, so not seeing them for a week was basically not seeing them for 3 weeks. I also think the biomom was being uncooperative with taking the kids because she already had plans. The kicker is that it was like the 17-23 of December or something, which was basically the dad’s Christmas with his kids because the mom had them for the actual Holidays. The OP was essentially forcing her husband to choose between his existing kids and her and the new baby, and most people in the comments were agreeing with her (except for any actual stepmoms). Two people blocked me on the post after calling me dumb, old, and ugly and then like two weeks later it came up in the comments of another post and another person from the original post ended up blocking me too.
Logical fallacies are taught in Freshman English too. And in high school…along with logos, pathos, ethos. I think that’s still the case. But people also see an absolute maniac be effective and rise to power by using fallacies and name calling. So to young people, it feels like a history lesson…sadly.
There are so many fallacies used in social media and I’ve faced quite a few. It really makes the other person seem like they’re not quite grasping the weight of the topic being discussed, it’s just a cop out to have the last say and shut you up. Many have used them if they know the other person is right but don’t want to accept it, they’re just looking to insult, they can’t handle conviction, or from sheer ignorance.

@Christina Wild I agree with you. It also seems like winning an argument is a game of endurance and pettiness. I think the internet sort of rewards that strategy…but it’s wrong and tiring.
Yes, and mostly by the so called “keyboard warriors”. They’re the ones who will drag on a debate with petty comments just to force the other person to give up, then they win. It’s all so shallow.
@Christina Wild I agree with you, but I think there is also a large group that don’t even realize they’re doing it, and I’m not sure which is worse.
I thought they were just like universal ‘what you need to do’s’ didn’t know it had a name for it or actual points on it so thank you for the education!
