Formula feeding / top up feeds

My little boy is a very hungry boy and at the moment we always offer 5oz feeds. Today at 4 he finished 5oz in about 20 mins and now he’s had a 3oz feed 2hrs30 later. Usually we like to try and wait min 3 hrs but ideally 4 if he allows it. Of course if he’s hungry we feed him but trying to gauge if he’s actually hungry or being fussy/tired. Does anyone else’s baby do this too? If they’re finishing their full feed do you automatically offer more milk?

My health visitor said if my little girl finishes a certain amount a few times then up her to the next amount, she will then have what she wants even if that means an extra couple of sips x

@Pauli I thought this but on the packet of formula it says 5oz for 4-8 weeks and he’s only 5 weeks today! I appreciate it’s only a guideline though. Seems mad that he wants so much 🙈 x

I’m going through the exact same with my little girl and she’s 5 weeks today

@Sam if he’s 5 weeks keep in mind he might be going through a growth spurt!! So he may very well need more food until the spurt is over then go back to eating a regular amount x

@Sam it is only a guide, my little girl has been on 150ml for around 2/3 weeks now and she’s 6 weeks x

@Sam ignore the packet it's only guidance, my health advisor and midwife told me if baby is finishing the amount you offer then offer more, they should be leaving some milk in the bottle when they have had enough. I do this with my little boy and he goes 2-4 hours between feeds, he's now 8 weeks and I've done this since birth. I combi feed him breastmilk and formula.

Thank you everyone. If he continues to finish 5oz then I will up to 6oz and see how that goes. And you’re fights @Nova he might be going through a growth spurt ❤️ I’m just conscious I don’t want to overfeed him on formula.

My health visitor said this week that as the weather is getting warmer baby might be thirsty so may want a smaller feed in between main feeds. She also said to use the packet as guidance and be led by baby

my boy is on 3-4oz every 2.5-3hrs at nearly 7 weeks old… why does my boy not feed like all yours☹️☹️☹️

@Charlotte thanks for sharing this. Makes total sense but not something I considered

@Olivia my girl is the same 7 week today and she takes 4oz about every 2 hours during the day sometimes 3oz. At night she started to do longer stretches. I suppose it just depends on the baby and as long as they keep gaining weight and they seem content then that’s all that matters x
