Any advice for pinching?

My two-year-old who is not quite communicating yet is now pinching when he is upset and on occasion will bite if he’s mad enough. Seems to be out of frustration, but I’m struggling to figure out ways to correct it. (We do not hit him even if it’s “just a tap on the hand”)

Is he able to communicate but just not verbally yet? If he has reciprocal communication skills, like responds even with a grunt or a syllable when you ask a question, you can teach him sign language for help or stop to communicate. This may take a lot of you shadowing him and stopping the behavior before it happens, when you stop the behavior you have to replace it with communication. Example, if he’s getting frustrated with a sibling not sharing and you see him going in for a bite or pinch while grabbing the toy, you will take the toy, put up your hand and say “stop” to the sibling who isn’t sharing, as a way to model the behavior that you want your 2 year old to do.

He signs a little bit just not really trying to put words into sentences or anything like that. I don’t feel that he’s fully understanding some things. we do gentle hands and if he keeps pinching, instead of that, I put him in a chair for time out to which sign and gives me a hug before he gets out of it. There’s no siblings in the house. It’s just us two during the day but now it seems like he’s pinching it and any slight inconvenience. Was just wondering if there was anything else I could be doing to help other than what I already am.

Signs sorry*

When my daughter slaps or pinches us and telling her “gentle hands” and demonstrating does not work, I tell her “mommy cannot be around you if you are going to hurt me, I need to remove my body so that you cannot hurt me again” and I walk away that usually upsets her but I add “when you are ready to use your gente hands I’ll be waiting for you” that mostly stops her but it is difficult at this age because of the communication, good luck with your LO ❤️

My husband does time out and it helps My child only pinches, slaps, punches and bites me. Nobody else

We say gentle, if he keeps doing it I remove myself from the location, then redirect with a new activity. The bigger reaction you have, the more they’ll want to do it
