Not talking yet

I’m unsure if i should reach out to HV for this. But my 14 month old still hasn’t said any words. He babbles, saying mama dada baba but he doesn’t link them to anything, just random. He was also a very late babbler, at 9/10 months was his first babble. I’m really concerned he’s speech delayed and i’m trying so much to talk with him and do songs and books but it feels like i’m getting no where. Has anyone got any ideas what i could try with him, will the health visitor offer anything at this age of not talking?

@Krystle ok thank you. I didn’t think the HV would be much help. They weren’t much help when I said he wasn’t making any noises at 9 months.

Does he make animal sounds? Say parts of words? Mine only had one or two words at 13 months, not even mama was one, but the language is exploding now at 16 months. There's some point between 19 and 24 months when language really gets going, and until then I wouldn't worry too much. We're still mostly babbling, but we have consistent words for different things (like "dee" for grandma), so I know the language is evolving. What I found helped me figure out what her words are, is I ask her "can you say _____?" And depending on what it is, she will either attempt the word or say her version of it. Based on her response I learned what her words were for different things and they don't always sound the way you might think they would. Most words for us at 13-14 months were just first syllables - "ha" for hat, "ba" for bath, "puh" for pup.

My little guy is almost 19 months old and still hasn't said a word. Not even Mama or Dada. Our first speech therapy session is on Monday.
