Baby wanting solids

My little one has just turned 19 weeks. Shes having a roughy 200ml of milk around 5 times a day, sometimes she’ll have a 6th bottle but not always. This does seem to satisfy her however she watches anyone who eats like a hawk, and then tries to eat her hands as she’s watching and dribbles lots! I couldn’t finish my dinner today because it made me feel so guilty with her watching me and clearly wanting some. Is anyone else’s little ones like this? I feel like the next 5 weeks or so can’t come quick enough so I can’t start weaning and she can finally have food bless her

My baby is the same, eyeing up my food big time! She doesn’t have the muscles to sit up unassisted yet though, so I will be waiting until she can do that before weaning. With my first she could sit around 5 months and was super keep (and so was I lol) but this time will wait longer as baby just hasn’t developed those sitting skills yet…and once you start weaning you don’t stop so I’m in no rush this time

Exactly the same with us. She is starting to balance though so hoping won’t be too much longer. That’s true but I just hate eating in front of her with those little sad eyes wanting some. I’m turning into a secret eater 😂😂

Hi. I could’ve written this myself. Same age and same amount of milk. My little one has 6 bottles of 210ml every 24 hours. He tries grabbing our food and watching carefully. I’ve heard of people beginning weaning at 5 months but I’m like you unsure what to do for the best. We’ve bought the bowls and plates ect ready. Xx

@Lauren me too, I have everything ready to get started. Even got some baby rice and porridge in to try for her first. I’m going to get the high chair out this weekend I think and start sitting her in it to get her used to it. If she is sitting up by herself before 6 months then I think I am going to start weaning then. I can’t make her keep waiting I feel so guilty lol

Which baby rice and porridge did you go for? I feel like I don’t know enough about weaning and like if there’s an order of foods to give ect xx

I’ve gone for cow and gate for both the small resealable packs to try. My son is 10 but I remember he liked cow and gate baby porridge when he was younger which is basically what made me go for those. The baby rice says from 4+ months and you add their baby milk to it which is why I want to try that first and see how she gets on. Then I’ll move onto the porridge as it’s a similar consistency that also says 4-6 months on the package but is made with water. It’s banana flavour. I’m assuming we could make that with their baby milk instead of the water though if we wanted to? I’ll check up on that though as is been such a long time since I’ve had a baby lol! X

@Lauren I used solid start for reference for how to prepare food for “baby-led” and then I think Ella’s kitchen does like a free weaning starter pack you can get that has like a chart where you can write down what veg/fruit they’ve tried and also gives you some vouchers for packaged purées and finger snacks

@Allie that’s sounds really good. Where do you get those packs from please? Would be really helpful to keep track

It’s natural hun, their tummies aren’t ready but their noses can still smell the food and their saliva glands respond to it. I run weaning classes and my go-to quote is “they watch you do the goo hoovering too but that doesn’t mean they’re ready to run round with the Dyson” 😂🤣 it’s just better to wait until you know their tummies are mature enough. I totally get it though. My 17 week old has started paying a lot more attention to my food lately! Little guilt trippers 🤣

Also I would recommend porridge over baby rice. Porridge is totally fine but if I’m being honest with you, baby rice has no nutritional value whatsoever unfortunately. It also tastes pretty rank 😂 absolutely porridge is a good choice when you do start. Obviously it’s totally up to you but that’s just my professional head 🥰

@Sarah ahh ok, thank you for that. I’ll skip the baby rice then, glad porridge is a good choice though. I’ve signed up to the Ella’s kitchen weaning club that Allie mentioned above. I have also purchased an Ella’s kitchen book too to help me make my own food for her rather than jars when she’s ready. I just feel so guilty 🤣 When someone else is eating I try and keep her occupied but nope she literally is like a little owl turning her head as far as it will go to have a good stare 😂 It’s been such a long time since my son I can’t really remember much 🫣

This is normal and doesn’t mean that they’re hungry. Putting things in their mouth is a way of learning and exploration for them and also self soothing it’s also really good for their immune system. You should only wean them when they’re showing signs of readiness such as being able to sit up unless otherwise recommended by you doctor

@Cerys thank you. I am going to wait until she is able to sit up unaided. Going to get her high chair out to help her get used to it though now. Trying her best to sit up to a sitting position alone let alone balancing bless her. She’s definitely eager 🫣🥰
