Using cutlery

Hello. I’m an autistic mum and I have a 2 and a half year old boy. I’m struggling to get him to use cutlery he’d rather eat with his hands or be fed by someone. I was wondering if anyone had any tips to encourage him to use a spoon (we have nearly mastered the use of a fork). He is also currently awaiting to be assessed as his nursery/health visitor think he’s showing autistic traits (has a speech delay and communication issues)

In the same boat, would be nice to chat about everything with another mum who understands, would you message me ✨🙂

My son uses a spoon but not firm of knife and likes me to feed him sometimes He's been addicted to triffle this past week and wants to eat it all day long 😅

We brought caring cutlery for my son. Does he need help from occupational therapy? Maybe have a game of making sandwiches or buttering toast. My son got there eventually!

My son is 3 he is non verbal has issues with using spoons and fork. One thing I learned from the ABA and OT therapist is do “hand over hand” prompts I would either stand behind him or next to him while doing this . I would have to do it a few times until he gets it or feels confident enough to do it himself. I’m still feeding himself here at home and there sometimes the teacher would have to help him do it . Everything is a repetition for him.

My 3 year old is autistic and I still have to feed him his food. It’s proving difficult trying to get him to use cutlery

My son is has a problem holding and gripping the a utensil. He gets frustrated and would want to be fed instead
