Advice please…

I have a 4 week old who we had to take to hospital yesterday due to congestion and gunky eyes. Whilst there, they asked how many ounces of milk we give him. This week I had increased his bottle from 3oz to 4oz as he was draining his 3oz bottles. He never finished the 4oz but occasionally drank more than 3oz. I had mentioned this to both midwife and HV and neither questioned it, said it “all sounded perfect”. However, the hospital said this was far too much based on his weight (he last weighed 7lbs 15oz a week ago, he was born weighing 6lb 13oz) and so I was told to only give him 2oz to ensure he isn’t being overfed. His poos aren’t consistent, but when he does poo they are extremely watery which now I’m thinking may be because I’ve been over feeding him? I gave him 2oz bottles during the night, but he still shows cues of hunger so this morning he had a 3oz bottle and drained it? Just wondering if anyone has any advice on how much should I give him based on his weight, age and hunger cues? Thank you!☺️

Personally I’d ignore what the hospital have said and keep feeding on demand. Your little one will tell you if they’re full! My little girl is 6 weeks on Wednesday and she’s already on 6oz bottles 😅

A midwife I spoke to last night said the exact same about ignoring the hospital! Just made me worry i’m making him poorly, especially with his poos being so watery and he does strain after some feeds, but he can go over 24 hours without pooing at all! Thanks so much for replying, really appreciate it ☺️

When my daughter was young due to her weight I was told to only give her 2oz feeds, we did this as we believed the professionals, my daughter screamed night and day, had so many tests to see what was wrong, is it colic, allergy. No she was starving. She would drain the 2oz bottles and be screaming for more. After 8 weeks we decided to follow her cues, she went up to 4oz bottles and was a different baby overnight. It’s very hard to overfeed a baby, especially if you stop feeding once they show signs of not wanting it anymore. I would go by your little guy and feed him what he wants.

6 month old has had watery poo’s since day one, only now that she is having solids has it started to firm up.

Follow baby’s lead.

Ignore the hospital, you (and your health visitor/midwife) know your baby's needs best! x

I would ignore the hospital hun and give baby what she wants! I’ve done that with my son since day one he’s 13 weeks now and I’m about to up him to a 7oz bottle, his poos have never been consistent either but I’ve never worried about them has long as they are a healthy colour and plenty of wet nappies! In terms of how much you should be feeding her the general rule is 2.5oz per pound of weight so she would need 20oz a day, so it’s perfectly fine to give 4oz as long as you’re only giving sort of 5-6 bottles a day 🫶🏽

The hospital staff are amazing and they handle so many different children that come through the doors. The midwives on the other hand know your child personally and have been involved in your baby’s care from before he was born, may not be the same midwife every time but they are one network. Also trust yourself as a mum, you made a decision because you know your child the most. Don’t doubt yourself

3-4oz sounds about right. Their concern was probably if the baby is too full and refluxy, it can cause congestion so they probs wanted to rule it out but 3-4oz sounds about right to me. I found this guide which looks helpful https://www.aptaclub.co.uk/content/dam/sn/local/gbr/aptamil/pdf-documents/1475411_UK_Aptamil_HowMuch_HowOften.pdf

Thanks so much everyone for replying, you’ve all put my mind at rest! Sometimes we just need to be told to follow our gut and all will be ok! ❤️

The NHS will just be giving advice and reading of a script. They don’t know your baby. Definitely stick to what you’ve been doing!

Hey, I’d absolutely ignore what the hospital have said. You can’t over feed a newborn baby, they feed intuitively. Also what’s the risk of over feeding? They gain weight? Sounds bizarre to me!

I’ve always been told that he can eat as much as he wants and there isn’t “too much” and to not listen to the hospital because they gave my husband and I so much wrong information.

My 4 day old baby is having 3oz every 3hours 🙈🙈🙈🙈
