sex & pregnancy

i turn 37 weeks pregnant tomorrow. it’s my second baby. i am wanting to start having sex with my partner again to try and help naturally induce labour, along with other “natural” methods that are supposed to help (this is due to the pain my pregnancy has been causing me, and my mental health i just need it done). Is it really actually safe to have sex this far along? I can’t comprehend it and I’m scared of hurting the baby. Also, what positions did you find are most comfy when having sex this late in pregnancy?

It's absolutely safe unless you've been advised not to by your midwife/doctor etc. Baby is very well protected in there! 🙂

You can experience braxton hicks/tightenings afterwards so just be aware x

@Izzy it just scares me i don’t know why, with my first we stopped having sex very early on (like early second trimester haha) cause i was uncomfortable and in pain when doing it. the last time we had sex this time round was three or four weeks ago, so ive managed to go on a lot longer but it starts hurting so we stop midway. i dont know how to have sex and it be comfortable this far along 🤣

I had sex all the way until my son was born, he was born on his due date, sex is safe all the way through pregnancy unless advised otherwise and there are benefits at the end of pregnancy to progress things apparently, I seemed to like doggy as it was the most comfortable or spooning from behind as it was less strain but it’s just what you find most comfortable

@Izzy i’ve been having lots of braxton hicks at the moment, which i also never experienced with my first, he feels a lot more uncomfy this time round than my first born did x

@Jessica i thought doggy would be a more painful position but if you say it was comfortable for you then i might have to give that a go and experiment with which position is most comfy. x

I'll be honest I didn't find sex comfortable at all but we tried to see if it would help move things along, think we did maybe three times in the week before my son arrived (he came 38 weeks exactly) and we hadnt had sex before then for months so I think it definitely helped! I had loads of strong cramping after each time x

Definitely do some experimenting with positions but make sure to stop if gets too painful for you, don’t give up hope, you will find a position best for you and your body, it’s a whole journey 😂 x

thank you ladies this has been super helpful! ❤️ i’m hoping to get a start on things, i have a 38 week growth scan next week and they might offer me an induction due to GD and depending on babies size, but if i can induce naturally id much prefer that. my first was a spontaneous birth at 40 weeks exactly (but i had 0 issues with him). induction scares me but due to my pain etc, i am willing to take it if i cant naturally induce myself but im trying everything out before it gets to that haha! Xx

Doggy style was the most comfortable for me or being on top 🤭

Comfortable positions are definitely person dependent. I was most comfy on top that far along, but we had sex all the way up to my induction date (41+4) to try to move things along naturally.

It's completely safe, and my midwife suggested it as an alternative to sweeps! It does cause me to have practice contractions, though!

It’s safe! You are not going to hurt your baby. They are super well protected in their amniotic fluid filled sac! And the 🍆 can’t get to them lol it would have to go inside the cervix. You could try different positions for your own comfort. I found being on my side the most comfortable

A friend of mine did everything in one day and went to labor that next morning. She said she watched a movie with her husband and bounced on the ball the entire time, went on a 45min walk, went home ate some pineapple, then that evening had sex. Position you can try is on your side, or doggy, or cowgirl

37w onwards is considered term. It’s totally safe, as long as you haven’t been told NOT to do so or have a high risk pregnancy. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t always work. I was doing everything right up until 41w.. fml

@Alana it seems it works with some and not with others! yes i’m 37 weeks tomorrow, which is when i want to start doing the methods etc, but like you say it could take weeks or just not happen at all, but then some it’s only taken a couple of days to get something moving so we will see how much luck i have 🤣 x

I found doggy most comfortable. It helped some when my husband would hold my stomach up a bit while doing doggy.

Sex didn’t do anything for me personally. I ended up doing a lot of walking to get things moving. That being said, if you’re not feeling sex, any orgasm with help. If partner is willing to give you all the attention, there are other options. 😉

So I have a great story… my husband kept saying we hope our daughter is born on a weekend so it’s convenient for him for work 😂 the Saturday was her due date… we haven’t had sex in a while because he’s been scared to, the dr recommended sex before and we said maybe we should try as it’s the due date… I swear literally after we did… boom the contractions started, 8cm dilated I said let’s go hospital, an hour later baby girl was here 💕 I think semen ripens the cervix and gets things going. I still couldn’t believe it worked on my due date lol. Good luck with everything x

@lale wow that’s amazing!! such a good story too 🤣 definitely seems like that worked, and i have seen online that for sex to help induce labour there needs to be orgasm. we tried this evening but couldn’t finish, either uncomfortable or awkward which i can get like hahah, so it was a bit of a disaster but baby steps lol x

Absolutely safe sweet x

it’s safe! unless your dr has specifically told you not to there’s no reason you can’t. your body’s whole job right now is to protect baby so they’re perfectly okay in there. when i was super pregnant doggy was the easiest, or laying on my back at the edge of the bed with him standing. i went into labor hours after sex! but as you probably know it’s ultimately all up to baby, i hope it will help you though!

In the last two weeks we were having sex every day almost, it’s definitely safe. I’m not sure if it helped to soften my cervix but it was nice to spend that time connecting before it was no longer just the two of us!

it's completely safe unless advised otherwise and as long as your not putting a bunch of pressure on your stomach. personally every position is uncomfortable to me but doggy seems the least uncomfortable

Good luck! I did raspberry leaf tea, dates, sex, hot baths and steps. It took 1 sweep and acupuncture to get labour started at 41w 😵‍💫

I have to say though I was walking A LOT! So that could’ve helped, before going to the hospital i was walking around at the mall for hours 😂 so I’d say walk curb walk and bounce on the ball if you have one to engage baby. And yes!! Haha it is very awkward and uncomfortable 😬 we just went for it like it’s a mission to complete. You’ll get there don’t worry, don’t stress x
