Milk is still their main source of nutrition until they are 1. Hands in the mouth could indicate a number of things including teething. Any baby will show interested in watching you food if you are putting things to your mouth, you could put anything to your mouth and they would show interest. If your baby isn’t sitting up unassisted then I wouldn’t give any solids, and would wait until 6 months. If you have TikTok, watch Ruth the Health Visitor, she has done videos on weaning and has a weaning guide for £5 which I find really useful! X
I would wait until he's sitting unaided (even if this is after the 6 month mark) Gagging anf choaking is scary enough when you're a forst time mum, not sitting unassisted will make it worse
@Mel and what would you do about the fact that he is literally never full 😂😂
Hey! If you think your baby is ready, do what you think is best. NHS says they need to be able to sit with support without their head flopping, they don’t have to be able to sit up yet 😊 it says “around” 6 months because that’s generally when all babies are ready but some earlier, some are ready later. My son is 5 months on Saturday and shows all the signs of readiness, we’re going to hold off for a couple of weeks and possibly make him some purée. Do what feels right for your baby, they’re not one size fits all and there’ll be lots of comments trying to tell you not to but you know your child! Good luck with whatever you decide x
How many ozs is your baby on? Maybe add extra feeds in? And I would speak to the health visitor to see what they advise. They may suggest weaning early, but I wouldn’t do it without their say so, just Becuase he isn’t sitting unaided. X
@Mel he had 180 mls every 2 ish hours and could go for more but as it’s expressed breastmilk I’ve been told not to give him more than 180 per feed x
I would give your health visitor a call and see what they advise. But of course it’s your baby at the end of the day if you want to start weaning then that’s your choice to do so x
I have started weaning my 5 month old on Monday. He can’t sit unassisted but can sit quite well in a high chair. He is loving the food… so far he has had turnip, broccoli and carrot. He loved the carrot and ate loads of it today. Do what feels right for your baby and if in doubt ask your HV.
I'd say wait until 6 months and when he is sitting up unassisted as the NHS recommend etc. There's no rush to start solids.
