Normal? Not normal ?

So my son will be 6 months on the 29th 🥹 his growing so fast 😭 to fast for my likeing due to being my 1st 🥺 , his next appointment with his doctor on the 29th and I can't get one sooner 🤷‍♀️ I tired to set one up cuase I'm worried that this isn't a normal thing for a 5 month old, his last appointment was march 3rd and he was eating about 6 to 8 oz now his taking 8 to 12 some times 16 oz per feeding . I'm unsure if I should give him soilds yet my fiance says his not ready to try but I feel like he is cuase he's reaching for my food when I sit with him to eat while I give him a bottle on top of pushing the bottle away (not always but about half the time)

For how many days has his milk intake been that high? Might he be coming up to a growth spurt? Being extra hungry isn’t a sign of being ready for solid food. Milk/formula is their primary form of nutrition until at least 12 months. Does he show all the other signs of being ready? (Good head control, shows interest in food, sits with minimal support, reaches for and brings objects to mouth) Most babies are ready by 6 months, but some are ready a little bit earlier or even a bit later! This might help you decide: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/weaning-and-feeding/babys-first-solid-foods/

12- 16oz per feed is alot? Is he keeping all of that milk down or spitting any up and how often are you feeding him?

@Lauren it depends on the day really , sometimes 1st thing in the moring he'll take 2 8oz bottles, about 4 to 5 hours later he'll take 10 maybe 12oz , other days he'll take 8oz every 3 hours sometimes 10 to 12 oz and he doesn't spit up at all nor acts like his over full but I wait like 10 15 mins in-between bottles cuase it's alot and I don't want him to get a tummy ache

@Rhiannon he trys taking food off my fork / spoon passes things from one hand to other puts everything in his mouth (toys , his blanket , his hands , my fiancé's and fingers ,and the baby tooth brush )

Your time between feeds are longer so more doesn’t seem too much to me. My little one was eating 8 oz every 2 hours at that age and the doc said if he is hungry and needs it give him what he needs. I don’t think it’s a lot. You can start with purees if he’s showing you other signs of being ready for solids.

@dara ❤︎ I'm not 100% sure if his showing signs cuase fiance says his not ready yet but at the same time he wants to try my food by reaching for what I'm eating when I sit next to him

hmm, it sounds like he's really growing and showing interest in food, but maybe just chat with your doc at the appointment to see what they think about starting solids! I actually checked the 'Heal Baby Care App' for this and here's what it says: "It's completely normal to feel a mix of emotions as your baby grows, especially as a first-time parent. At 6 months, many babies are ready to start solids, especially if they show interest in food and can sit up with support. The increase in milk intake can also be normal as babies grow, but it's good to monitor how he reacts to feeding. You can start introducing solids if he seems interested, but focus on single-grain cereals or pureed fruits and vegetables. Just ensure he can sit up with support and has good head control.

@Susan he hated laying down since he been about a month old so I put him in my nursing pillow and his practical sitting on his own (about 30 to 60 sec before falling over ) and sits up well in the pillow but he will rock back and froth to get him self to slide down a bit to be in a relaxed position the sitting straight/ nearly straight up

Have you tried feeding him every 2-3 hours instead of a big stretch of 4-5 hours? Also, you can start baby on solids he's almost 6 months old which is the reccomended age anyway

@Becky he won't eat ever 3 every day

OK, try with solids, then if your baby is shwoing these signs Signs of readiness:  Good head and neck control.  Can sit up with support.  Shows interest in food (watching others eat, reaching for food).  Doesn't push food out of their mouth.

Is he on purées yet if so start purées

@Kaitlyn he isn't, idk what ones to have time to start with other the veg but idk what ones are good to start with

@Becky he makes a sucking noise when he watches me eat something

@Rhiannon do you have the solid starts app? Everything you need to know with weaning you'll find on there

@Rhiannon I started with fruits but I’d start with veggies and start with the greens and look for supported sitter if he’s not sitting by himself

@Becky there an app ??

@Kaitlyn we will be getting him a seat soon so he can be up in something for food time instead of in the nursing pillow holding him up

My doc put my son on solids at 4.5 months. He was drinking about 40 oz in a 24 hour period. He was also grabbing at anything I put in or near my mouth, including my cups. The guideline from my doc said if baby is at least 13 lbs, has doubled birth weight, and drinks at least 32 oz a day. Plus, if baby is showing interest in your food, it might be time. I would also suggest talking to the doc, but you could also introduce solids like pureed foods or oatmeal. My doc doesn’t like the idea of rice cereal because of the arsenic in rice. My baby hates oatmeal but he took to solids immediately. My doc also suggested starting with green veggies before going to fruit because baby might want fruit all the time because it’s sweeter. I started with green beans and peas. He’s also had bananas, apples, pear, and baby yogurt. I didn’t get to read through all of the responses so this info may have already been mentioned.

Babies GI system isn't usually developed enough to start solids until 6 months old. They can be sitting up on their own and grabbing for food, but internally their gut might not be developed enough for it and there's no way of knowing. For this reason alone we waited until after 6 months to introduce any solids.

You should start solid at six months

@Shanta he doesn't have his 6 month appoint till the 29th , and I can't get a sooner appointment . On the 3rd of March he was 16.3 pounds and his brith weight was 9.4 pounds his prob more now deff feels like it but doesn't look like it

@Louma I'm just worried his 2 hungry on top of the amount his eating doesn't seem good since it's so much

@Hessa like I said his my 1st I'm not sure if his showing his ready , with my fiance saying his not but he's acting like it and drinking alot and I don't think it's good for him to be drinking that much but his not looking bloated or something esle like it was wrong

@Rhiannon As long as he's not throwing up or it's not causing gas or reflux you can't give a baby too much formula/breastmilk. They know when they've had enough, they'll refuse more. For me it was more about letting their guts fully develop to be ready to recieve the solids.

@Hessa ok 👍
