You can start on light purées (mostly just to get tastes) from 4 months 😌 And then on to thicker purées from 6. There’s lots of great guidance around. I started doing little tastes of things 2 weeks ago.
The NHS and WHO is to wean from 6 months. Traditionally people started at 4 months and companies are allowed to advertise that. However there are campaigns going on and they are trying to get it to parliament to make it illegal to label for less that 6 months (and hence gping against NHS) A lot of people don't even do purees and start on BLW straight away. Your choice.
I've started at 4.5 months because she was grabbing absolutely everything food and drink wise, can sit up fairly well unaided and has severe reflux. I've started with one ingredient purées, just to make sure there's no reaction.
I’ve started this week as my son was showing signs he was ready. In Ireland the HSE recommends that weaning starts between 17 and 26 weeks. So I started my son at 22 weeks as he is sitting well, interested in food etc. I cooked lots of different veg at home, mashed them and froze in ice cube containers. I mashed instead of puréed the veg as the texture should thicken over time so I purée them after I defrost an ice cube. So far my little guy has had turnip, carrot, broccoli, sweet potato and potato. He is loving it and eating well. I intend to introduce finger foods from 6 months
@A.R. hi, not judging here. I was just curious abiut your comment that in Ireland it is recommended to wean between 17 to 26 weeks. I like knowing what people so in other countries but all I found from the HSE was 6 months https://www2.hse.ie/babies-children/weaning-eating/weaning/stages/
@A.R. I found some information. Never mind
@Conchi no problem!! To be honest I think 17 weeks would be too early unless there was like a medical need for a baby to start solids. But I followed guidance on signs that baby is ready to be weaned and was comfortable to start. I think if I wanted to exclusively do BLW I would wait til 6 months but as I want to do combination weaning I was happy to start the purées now and introduce the finger foods later
@A.R. they do say to also wait for the signs and not just go by age. But I found interested that they say when baby van sit aided but in England it's unaided.
@ahealthvisitor on Instagram just did a really good video on this
