Bookworm

I bought some books for my LO when she was 1, just because I thought they’d be cute—haha. I didn’t grow up in a reading household (not even bedtime stories!), but now at 2, she’s obsessed with books. She’d rather read than play with toys! I haven’t done anything special to encourage it, so now I’m wondering— Is this just a toddler phase, or is there something I should be doing to support her love of reading? Would love your thoughts!

Lots of toddlers love reading! My daughter is in the middle of a book phase right now. Just follow her lead!

sounds like she has a natural interest so i would just read to her as much as you can! my 2yo daughter loves books

I think both. I think you should totally support it that’s awesome. But I also just think it’s the toddlers curiosity. My son is also loving reading and looking at the book. I hope he grows to love actually really. My husband loves it. I hate it. So I’m definitely hoping we can teach them to love it

My daughter is almost 3 and has never left the loves books phase. At the moment she will choose story after story for me to read. I think the most we've done in a row is about 15. Keep reading to her when asked

Just keep reading and update your book collection according to her age

Encourage it but don't force it would be my suggestion. I loved books as a child (according to my parents lol) and my mom taught me to read early because I wanted to and I was a total bookworm all through school. As an adult I've gone through phases but I'm getting into it again more now. I think it's also important for kids to see us as parents reading books we like.

Mines also loves books but some days she is happy with toys instead or other days always with a book. She has a leapfrog leapstart thing and loves that it's an interactive book toy with lots of different books available to buy separately. Definitely use your local library for books too

There are proven links between a love of reading for pleasure and higher intelligence levels :) one of the best things you can do is nurture a love of reading x

Thanks so much to all the moms for your helpful and thoughtful input — I really appreciate it

@Rachel You see, I could easily be your mom hahaha — it even crossed my mind to teach her to read early! Thanks for the insight 😊

I also didn’t really get read any stories growing up so I read with my toddler and he LOVES it. He’s three in August and loves books we have a library of books. Not knowing about books and now venturing into the book world I am always in love with all the kids book.

I love this! Can never go wrong supporting more reading! My kids are 10 and almost 9 and we still do reading at bedtime together! I too didn’t have it as a kid. What we do now that they can read more, we take turns reading to each-so 1 kid reads one night then I read the next night and we do this pattern so that learning reading on their own as well- that and after we all read together then they are welcome to read books in bed til they fall asleep! We are definitely book lovers here! So enjoy the adventures! 📚

Reading is great and at this age encourage it as much as possible because it will help later in life as well. I was always told the more babies read at a young age the better they will do in school because they understand language
