I would personally wait until 6 months. Introducing solids early has been linked to bowel cancer and IBS later on in life. X
No. It’s not recommended to give baby’s anything besides milk until 6 months without it being under the care of a doctor. Giving a baby food too early can lead to gastrointestinal issues later in their life. There are also certain criteria that baby’s need to be achieving before having foods introduced into their diets, such as being able to sit unaided, interest in food, hold their head steady…
The 4+ months on the packaging is a con to make you spend money earlier. Baby food can fill up their tummies meaning they don’t have so much milk, which is more nutritious. There are definitely times where it’s appropriate before 6 months (I know I had solids early as I was a colic baby, and I’m fine!) but definitely consult your GP or an appropriate health provider first. My girl was 16 weeks yesterday and is knocking on 17lbs and drinking 25oz a day on average if that helps.
So there’s a lot of information out there saying weaning earlier than 6months can affect gut health (I’ve not heard of bowel cancer) I’ve tried searching for studies on these and there’s actually mixed conclusions. I’ve either found most studies are on animals. I’ve also found some studies saying before 3months affect gut health. Some studies also say results are inconclusive My health visitor did say to me there are talks on bringing the guidance back to ‘from 4.5months to wean’ Personally I’d probably wait until Atleast 5months (I’d say 4.5months but whats another 2 week wait?) You definitely have to wait until baby is ready and can hold head up etc… I also view it as ‘it’s called weaning for a reason’ if you wanted to start early (if baby is showing signs) then start with little things… it’s not like you’re jumping straight into giving a full meal instead of a bottle at 5months…. Of course I could be wrong but that’s what I think
NHS guidance says to wait until 6m. In some cases of babies with allergies or other health conditions where they struggle to maintain weight, doctors might recommend starting earlier. But usually, babies don’t need food for sustenance until closer to 1yo and food before that age is simply to learn to eat safely / get used to flavours and textures / get digestive tract used to food slowly. So there really is no rush 😀
Wait till 6 months there’s actually people trying to get the law changed so that company’s can’t advertise from 4 months
Yes! Slowly start weaning him. I know a lot of women are saying the opposite but at the end of the day it wasn’t that long ago that the advice was to wean at 4 months. You know your baby better than anybody. If you see signs that it’s not agreeing with him then you can stop but there is no harm at all trying. Every baby is different so do what works for you and your family.
I feel like as well the people here are acting like you are gonna give baby a 4 course meal😂😂just start slowly and be vigilant on signs that baby may be enjoying or not enjoying x
@Maryam guidance changes for a reason 🤦🏻♀️
I completely agree guidance does change for a reason but when there’s no evidence to back it up…. It’s also called guidance for a reason
I’d say as long as he can sit up then go for it! X
The evidence suggests you should wait till 6 months. Lots of people do from 4 but I personally would wait rather than risk it. Also be aware baby rice is not recommended as it has no nutritional value.
I’d ask your HV some encourage early but it’s based on each baby. They are the best placed to say not us x
The health visitors advice to us is to start from 6 months. And if you want you can start as early as 4 months start to introduce foods. But they say their digestive system isn't fully developed at 4 months so can cause allergies etc if things are introduced to early. Ive read a few times usually if a baby is sitting down by themselves and grabbing things to put in the mouth is a que to start trying things out. But they don't need the food as milk is very much where they get everything from. Its to get them into the habit of different textures and flavours. I would maybe consult your health visitor if your not sure x
