Weaning

Anyone struggling with weaning? We started BLW but then found that a lot of food was getting stuck on the roof of our son’s mouth and probably paused a bit early. Now I’m finding it really hard to get started again! My partner is a little reserved about it, he’s worried about choking and doesn’t understand how our son will be able to chew etc. I feel like we’re also a little difficult with what we want to give him - no bread or much starch which is a little limiting with food ideas (maybe?!)! I’m not sure what I’m asking just want some advice I guess 🤣🥲

Have you tried following any books like "how to wean your baby' or 'young gums'? There's lots of meal ideas in there. The app 'solid starts' also has a free bit that shows you how to serve food for each age and is so helpful. You could do yogurt with banana sticks, the star pasta is excellent if you make some pasta sauce from blending lots of roasted veg, porridge etc. It's really scary starting out but sounds like you're doing amazingly 💪

I’m struggling as well (and would definitely count myself an ‘expert’ having taken a BLW course, baby first aid course, reading all the things, and having been through it just last year with my first)! We just got back from holiday and my baby had a horrible choking incident - she puked yellow bile all over the table then went red then blue, had to do back blows. She’s always been way more gaggy than my first but this incident really freaked me out especially considering it was a perfectly ‘safe’ food, size preparation and everything. Coupling that with her CMPA and trying to figure out if her on & off tummy issues are from me doing the milk ladder and breastfeeding or something else.. this stuff is hard. Only advice is it’s ok to take it at whatever pace you feel comfortable, just keep in mind that 1. by about 1 y/o they should be getting most nutrients from food not milk and 2. it’s important for them to start trying different textures so they can practice chewing & swallowing

Only website that anyone in the uk should use is the nhs start for life. Lots of information about weaning including gagging/choking and also meal ideas. Once 6 months old they can eat anything except honey, shark or swordfish.

I really wanted to do BLW but my little one - while interested in food and a good eater, he gags a lot and shoves big pieces of food into his mouth and then doesn't know what to do with them. While some people may say that he will learn this way, I spend our meals stressed out no end watching him like a hawk. We also had an incident with a cucumber - which he had several times before - where it clearly went the wrong way and he stopped breathing for a bit and then somehow managed to get it out, then cried hysterically and it took me a while to calm him down (and calm myself down!). Then I did some research on BLW scientific research that would back this approach as a better one to traditional weaning, and apparently it's a new thing and there's no solid scientific backing for it yet. I could only find one study comparing the traditional and BLW approach in terms of choking risk. So I made a conclusion that I will do it traditional way, just make the food myself and go from purees to lumpy foods etc.

Thanks everyone 🥰
