Been told I NEED to come in to work while my child is sick

My baby got sent home from nursery and had to be picked up by dad because I wasn't 'allowed' to leave my work despite there being enough staff. We've also been told she's not allowed back till next week. I've been told he needs to look after her tomorrow too because I HAVE to come in as someone is on holiday (someone was also on holiday today so it makes no difference). But tomorrow he has work and earns more than me so it makes more sense for me to stay home, which asside from that my baby is a mummy's girl and wants mummy while she's sick - she just cried today after being picked up cause she wanted me despite usually being okay with daddy. My partner has also told me he will be fired if he asks for a day off this close to his shift so I have to stay with her as there is no one else. No friends or family anywhere near us. What do I do?

Wow your work place is shocking telling you that to be honest. I wouldn’t allow my workplace to dictate who looks after my sick child. Do you like your job? I would reconsider even working there if not. I think stay with the poorly child in my opinion. It’s not ur fault your child is sick. There are laws to protect you with this kind of stuff. I guess it depends on what country you are based but you certainly have protections if you live in England and have a permanent contract with work

Your work should have a policy where you can call in for emergency leave. You won't get paid for it. I've had to call in when our nanny had covid. I also had to call in when I needed to go to the hospital for pain and low fetal movements. My husband had to call in when I needed to go to the hospital for irregular heart rhythm

look up unpaid parental leave on gov website if ur from uk

Sorry, I am from UK. My managers just don't want to spare a single person and it seems like they've had enough of me leaving because my little one is unwell, but it's not anything I can help, she's at nursery!

Tell them to shove their job up their arse and be with your baby 🥰

I see you're in the UK, in that case your partner is wrong for a start, BOTH of you are entitled to dependant leave, you absolutely cannot be sacked over it! You may not be paid, but you're certainly entitled to it. If my boss told me I couldn't leave I'd laugh in her face, point out the dependant leave policy and walk out!

Are you in the UK? You are allowed parental leave for looking after sick children (I believe it's 2weeks in total unpaid) I would speak to HR about your manager

@Kath that’s what I said to look into they can’t just reject it for no reason they have to allow some time off at some point
