Food Fear! Help!

My daughter is days away from 8 months and we’re still on purées. I’ll give her a banana in a fruit feeder and even that makes her gag! I’m terrified to try more. Gagging and choking is my biggest fear. I’m on solid starts but even that makes me feel crazy. Gave her an orange the other day, gagged! I know gagging is normal but someone please help talk me off the ledge!

Totally normal and helpful for their development! Our preemie had a hard time when she first started solids & her dad was TERRIFIED of her choking, so he got one of those lifevacs for her! We have yet to need it, and she still gags from time to time. But eats every meal with us now! It takes time and patience but it’ll be totally worth it. Keep offering, even if she doesn’t eat it, she’s learning how to use her jaw muscles.

If it makes you feel better, get a lifevac. Babies can choke on purees also, literally anything. Your baby has to learn to eat, it’s apart of development. Babies gag, that helps them to learn to not choke. Also watch some youtube videos or go to a class on helping a choking baby.

Research the different between gagging and choking, that helped me calm fears in what to be looking for.. I know it's scary but a babies gag reflex is more prominent because it helps them develop eating habits and protect them from choking I know it's scary, but everything is.. it'll be ok! Just start small and work larger, my girl eats almost everything I do now! I started with teether wafers and yogurt melts to help get more comfortable since they melt in their mouths

My baby is 8 months and still on purées as well. Gagging is the body’s natural response, food is new. I fear the choking also but as long as his gag reels works, choking is less likely is how I see it. Keep trying xoxo good luck

Thanks ladies!
