I've heard very mixed opinions on it. There are doulas out there that are great but there are also some that give very bad advice and can cause a lot of damage. The important part is making sure to get someone good or no one at all.
I'd do it if you have the finances! I've had two public births but from what I've read and the research, intervention is more likely in a private setting and a good doula will educate you, support your birth plan, and be a good support person as I don't know if you get continuity of midwifery care in private? A doula will allow you to believe in your body and baby and help you get the best results. Good luck!
I'd also suggest getting a student midwife if you feel comfortable with it. I dont know how it is where you are but here they have to accompany a certain number of women through pregnancy for their course.
Thanks all. We have a private OB we see every few weeks. For birth it’s 1 midwife and the OB present. Thankfully money isn’t an issue for us. I would personally never want students or anyone like that, I feel that would stress more than help me 😂 I might just do a class with a doula and see if that then sparks my interest to think it’s worth it etc. Thanks all ☺️
I’d highly recommend. Home birth for both my babies and a private midwife is well worth the investment :)
Get one! Best decision and investment ever! The pre and post birth care are great but the main thing for me was being able to labour at home comfortably and feeling so safe because she could tell when it was time to go to hospital. I had no idea as a FTM. She knew exactly when to be there during labour and support and when to give me and my partner room. At hospital she would just make sure we understood exactly what needed to be decided and constantly made sure I was as comfortable as possible and in the best position. My partner was very apprehensive about it but ended up being very grateful too.
