Weaning!

Im due to start weaning my boy next month and honestly im petrified but not sure if im thinking too much into it. Where do i even start, I copied a weaning chart from tiktok. How much will he have a day to start with, will he still have his normal amount of bottles? What foods did you start with, I heard broccoli with his milk blended is a decent one?

I started with a breakfast pouch or some weetabix then slowly upped it every couple off weeks as my girl was really interested in food, she had solid foods like egg and stuff at 8 months x

I went straight in with baby led weaning so her first food was banana then broccoli and then went from there. After a few weeks she was having ‘full meals’ Baby will gag a lot, it is completely normal and a good thing, it does settle down. Yes normal amount of milk, baby will gradually reduce as they start to eat more. Start with 1 meal a day, it won’t be much but will slowly increase. Don’t over think it, you will be fine

I did a free online weaning class which was really useful, might be worth looking for one 😊 yes normal amount of milk as they are just having tastes rather than proper meals, breast milk or formula is still their main food. A couple of teaspoons is enough for them at the start, think of it more as a tasting snack than a meal. Lots of places recommend starting with vegetables as fruit is sweeter so babies like it more (breastmilk is naturally quite sweet in taste).

Buy Charlotte Stirling smith or follow on tik tok If you want to be told what to do and have structure I kept the same bottles but always offered the food before the liquid so was slightly hungry with each new taste. Write it all down and intro allergens early a few days apart and always in the morning so you can monitor

I done a different vegetable purée each day for two weeks to see if he was allergic to anything. Didn’t give him fruit for a few weeks as I wanted him to like the vegetables which are stronger in taste. He now loves broccoli and Brussels sprouts!

Ella’s kitchen offer a free weaning chart if you sign up on their website https://www.ellaskitchen.co.uk/weaning which can help with keeping track of foods you give baby

We started with mashed peas. Did veg only for a few weeks. Then porridge and fruit before starting some baby led stuff after about 6 weeks

I used this weaning chart which I found really helpful to make sure I was giving my LO a variety of foods. I actually date in the circles rather than tick so I can see when he’s had what so he’s not having the same thing everyday. Then each week I plan out my meals for him (or a rough idea) and pick a few things to put together in a meal for him. It’s essentially helpful for tracking allergens too. I try not to overthink it with making fancy things, especially at this age so will just select a few couple of things he’s not had recently and give him them and he loves it. Hope this helps! https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1883715605/?ref=share_ios_native_control
