Anyone considering placenta encapsulation?

I've just been reading about it and I wondered if anyone else has this on their radar, or better yet, if anyone here has tried and tested it.

I did it, have only had one kid so couldn’t say whether it made a difference but I’d do it again!

My sister did it with both of her kids! She liked it and it’s supposed to be really really good for your baby while breastfeeding!

I did it but have yet to take the pills 😬

Anyone know how much it is to do this?

@Gems Depends where you are in the country, it seems, but around £250 for simple pills. There's a whole host of other stuff that can be made out of it as well... Including a smoothie 😅

It's a no from me. I see it as self cannibalism. I looked into it whilst pregnant the risks outweigh any 'benefits' imo.

I’m a week postpartum and had my done with placenta plus! Was very overwhelmed and anxious coming home but each day is getting easier, maybe it’s the capsules? This is my first baby so not got anything else to compare it to xx

It’s not for everyone of course and many will say you’re crazy to do such a thing. But for many others, it does exactly what it needs to do. I offer placenta encapsulation and cord keepsakes in the state of Va. I don’t usually recommend shipping a placenta for encapsulation for the sake of needing to care for it with safe food handling standards. If it can be kept cold with ice/dry ice and guaranteed overnight shipping, that should be fine. Otherwise, you only get one and one chance to prepare it correctly. Prices vary from $150-450 USD depending on area and what else you receive with it. You can also choose to take your placenta home and utilize it in other ways if you don’t want to or can’t invest it for whatever reason.

@Molly I find that interesting, especially as most mammals eat it straight after birth. I get the risks you're talking about, but at the same time, dehydrating it and encapsulating seems quite safe. I just hope they actually use your placenta and not some other random ingredient, while selling it off (as you can make a lot of money out of that which is what hospitals around the world seem to do).

I’m doing it. Having a doula come to my house and encapsulate it there. I let my midwife know and she said her only concern was where it was being processed. When I said my house, she said that was completely fine - her logic was “your germs live at your house so there is a much lower chance of contamination with something that would make you ill”. So I guess my piece of advice is to do it yourself or have the person who is doing the encapsulation process do it at your house. It also gives you piece of mind that you’re getting YOUR placenta and not some snake oil pill lol.

@Brooklyn very interesting! I've yet to find someone who'd do that here in the UK...

@Ana I’m US based but was able to find someone through a few Google searches for placenta encapsulation and doula services. Maybe even holistic medical professionals?

@Andreea it looks like you just pick the provider and book it. Depends on who's doing it near you... There's a national service as well called Placenta Practice. I'm still looking into it though!

Hi Ana, I looked into this too and from what I read there are some huge great benefits. I found this woman in my local area and she talked me through it over the phone in great detail. Unfortunately in the end I wasn't able to have it done as I was extremely ill and there was a chance my placenta wasn't working as it should and so couldn't be used. https://www.birthbabybalance.co.uk/placenta-encapsulation
