Baths

My baby’s 5 weeks tomorrow and only ever had 2 baths. His first at 10 days and his second at 22 days old. I wanted to wait for his umbilical cord to heal for his first bath and then his skin always dries out after each bath too. I know his skin is delicate so I didn’t want to over do it as it’s sensitive and I believe young babies don’t need bathed often as they aren’t getting “dirty” but am I being neglectful??? Some people I know baths their babies nearly everyday so I’m not sure If I’m being bad? He always has clean nappies on and clean clothes ect and will get wiped down with a baby wipe frequently

Have you tried baby lotion after drying off? It helped tremendously with my kids’ post-bath dry skin 🥰💗

@Jordan we used lotion after both baths and his skin was still really dry!! X

@Jordan it’s not his skin being dry that worries me but because of it getting dry I know it’s delicate but I want to know if I’m doing the right thing by not over washing him but also maybe I’m doing the wrong thing?? But the only comparison I have is to an adult but we sweat and all sorts of stuff

So he hasn’t had a bath in 2 weeks? I feel like it would be better to find a safer soap/lotion for his skin than to bathe him so infrequently. My daughter also has very sensitive skin and we use bambo baby soap for her and earth mama non scented baby lotion

Babies get dirty too even if they aren’t playing in dirt. There’s dead skin, skin oils, sweat, pee, poop, spit up, and milk. Even just bacteria and germs that they pick up from existing. Baby wipes are nice but they don’t really have any soap in them and don’t have the advantage of rinsing. Babies don’t need baths everyday but probably once a week would be better than waiting two weeks.

We spongebathed until her umbilical cord fell off and then moved to bathing every 2 - 3 days. Babies may not sweat and get dirty like adults but with all the poop, drool and spit up getting in their creases and skin folds, they can get pretty stanky 😅

Earth mama organics have some very gentle baby soap and baby lotion. That worked really well for my sensitive baby. Personally, I would want to find something that works well for my baby. Because there will be days when the puke/poop/pee goes everywhere. And little one needs a bath. Sometimes multiple days in a row.

We bathe and then cover our daughter in aquaphor!

I wouldn’t say it’s neglectful but I would for sure be sponge bathing baby until the cord falls off and then bathe him regularly because it’s really good for them, very relaxing, not to mention it keeps them clean bc as someone mentioned even though they’re newborns they still get dirty and they can even develop skin rashes/infections in their skin folds from trapped moisture/sweat/milk, etc. we use baby aquaphor body wash and it has worked wonders for my kid and she’s 1 1/2 now.

Yeah you need to bathe him more and find a soap/lotion that is good with his skin, babies still sweat and get dirty. I was the same with my son at first but it’s all about getting over these hurdles, you’ve got this!x

I understand why you don’t want to over wash him as such especially with your concerns but babies do have dry skin it is very normal, obviously to an extent, I would switch soaps or try a different lotion, it’s trial and error, I would only eliminate one at any time and try a different one and see how that goes so you’ll know what it is that dries out his skin more, I unfortunately don’t have any recommendations as I just use Johnstons and I’ve never had any problems with it but I would say that your baby is going too long without being bathed, they sweat, spit up, drool, poo and pee all the time not washing regularly can cause their creases to get red and sore and nappy rash as their private areas are not being fully cleaned often enough etc. I bath my little one every second night. We went 4 days without a bath a couple weeks ago due to me having severe pain in my arm and not being able to hold him over the bath properly and on the 4th day I could literally smell the spit up on him.

If you try some different soaps and lotions and still feel like his skin is to dry address this with your midwife, health visitor or doctor, they can advise you on what the best thing to try next would be or look into it further for you to see if there is anything causing it health wise such an eczema etc

I’d try some different soaps, idk about you but my baby gets so grubby, the creases in his hands are always black from constantly eating them and having them clenched😂😂

You’re not neglecting your baby in anyway. Babies don’t need bathing every day. You’re his mummy and it’s up to you not anybody else. We held off for a while with bathing my baby because he had really really dry skin which later down the line is eczema. We didn’t even bath our little boy until he was about 8 weeks old. I honestly can’t believe people are saying ‘neglectful ‘ wtf

My baby has always had three baths a week. If you’re worried don’t use product on some of the days. It’s good them to get used to water. Their parts need cleaning, the wipes only do so much. Plus it helps prevent infections in their rolls as they also get cleaned.
