Baby losing weight/colic/reflux

Just need to vent I think, and know I’m not alone. Baby boy is 3 weeks old. At his 5 day check he had lost 7% of birth weight. At follow up appointments he continued to lose weight and was readmitted to hospital. Weight started to go back up. Re-weighed again today and he’s now down to 9.8% of birth weight lost. He breastfeeds and is doing well with it - on the boob for between 15-45 mins at a time. We also give top up feeds of expressed milk throughout the day. He has tongue tie (getting sorted soon) and struggles with colic/trapped wind during the evenings, Often screaming in pain for a couple of hours. We give infacol morning and night. Midwives have suggested reflux, so have appointment with doctor this afternoon to discuss. I just feel like a failure - he struggles to settle due to clearly being in pain, he’s feeding well throughout the day and night but is still losing weight. Anyone else been in the same boat and have some positive stories? I’m scared of his losing any more weight! Xx

I don’t have any advice, but you are not a failure! Please don’t think that. If he has tongue tie that will be affecting his eating same as reflux. You are doing brilliantly mumma, just keep going ❤️

Maybe he has CMPA?? Does he have any other symptoms like rashes? Green poops? Mucus in his poo?

@Natalya no, nothing like this. I did google symptoms but he doesn’t have any of those x

Reflux will be caused by tongue tie. Please make sure it is being released by a qualified tongue tie practitioner who provides proper aftercare and exercises. Doctors and HV’s aren’t qualified in tongue tie

You can give infacol with every feed to help with the wind. Might be worth giving a couple of formula bottles a day to help and ease the pressure. You are doing amazing!

@Lauryn we did formula but this seemed to make things worse for him x

I had a similar experience with mine having a tongue tie and needing to top up with formula because of slow weight gain. I took mine to see an osteopath which helped with his latch and also colic by releasing tension in his cheeks/jaw and back. I hope this helps! It’s tough but it will get better, it just takes time, would deffo recommend more formula in the meantime to help with the weight gain! X

Try giving probiotics too(give it time, should see improvement within 4-7 days), also plenty of bicycle legs and tummy massage. Keep little one upright for 30mins after feeds if you're not already doing that. Best of luck-you'll get through this!

My LO seemed to be breast feeding really well but like yours lost quite a lot of weight in the first few weeks. I ended up switching to formula thinking it was a milk supply issue, later found out he had a tongue tie and have now got that sorted. The change in him was incredible - so much better at feeding, and because of that he takes in less air and therefore has way less gas discomfort and the crying that goes with it. I spoke to the tongue tie specialist about my BF journey and she said that the tongue tie was likely causing issues with how much milk he was actually taking in as well as how much he was stimulating me to build my milk supply:
