Baby struggles to poop every time. Why?

My 3 week old struggles to poop, she eventually does but it takes a lot of effort and squirming. Why? What can I do to make it better? She was pooping just fine without too much effort.

Are you formula or breastfeeding? If formula you could try changing to a new one, would recommend doing it gradually and you have to give it time to settle. I had to change my son off Cow and Gate it was giving him trapped wind and he was crying in pain x

They don’t know how to use their muscles yet! My baby was better at like 6 weeks

my baby is the same sometimes she’ll poop fine, sometimes she’ll grunt abit and sometimes she’ll go red pushing and cry it’s normal they don’t know how the muscles work yet, as someone said, if the poos are soft and aren’t coming out in hard little pebbles don’t worry they are fine and will grow out of it x

What's the texture of the poop?

@Finn I’d say mostly pasty but normal.

@Sharna breastfeeding

@Abi she still poops, maybe less but it still looks normal

@Abi it might be gas??

My 3 week old is the same at the moment 😩

@Benedetta my breastfed baby sometimes poops a little less but not loads less, this is all normal thought i wouldn’t be concerned unless your baby poos are like hard pebbles

@Anna I’m so sorry! Must be a 3 week old thing

@Benedetta sometime but 9x10 i hold her knees to her belly for her and she will poo

My little one was much the same as this and she had a dairy intolerance and would always strain/struggle to poop, not sure if it was ever linked but as she got more tolerable to dairy she also was able to poop easier, around 9 months 🙃

Try bicycle legs, rubbing her belly, had to do this for my son in first few weeks until he learnt how to use the muscle properly 🩵

@Rachel how long did it take for him to learn?

Look up infant dyschezia. It’s incredibly common because babies are learning how to use the muscles etc. Unfortunately many people quickly jump to changing milk and allergies which I believe makes it worse in the long run. My girl is 14 weeks now (10 weeks corrected) and it is much better now
