Play

Worried about how my 2 year old plays. He got a kitchen for his birthday and finds much more enjoyment of just filling and emptying in the kitchen cupboard on repeat. When shown he can play witb it properly like imitating to eat food, mixing in a pan, adding play food to pan, pretending to wash foods, making us a drink through pouring into a cup. He's also got a wooden train track and finds much more enjoyment in taking the trains off the track and putting it next to him to then put them back on again and repeat. Is this normal 2 year old play behaviour or should i be worried?

I personally wouldn’t be worried. My son doesn’t ’play properly’ with his stuff, he’ll learn x

Nope, perfectly normal! Sounds like he’s discovering opposites: in/ out and on/off in these scenarios. Can play with him by adding more opposites like over/ under, clean/ dirty, up/down, together/ apart. Most infants and toddlers will have a singular learning focus they’ll do until they feel they’ve mastered the skill before moving on to another skill.

This is how 2 year olds play. They like taking things apart and putting them together in different ways. Stacking cups, felt boards, magnets and reusable stickers are good toys when they are interested in this

Two is still so young. I think if he can do 'functional play' (like mixing in a pan) sometimes that's pretty dang good.
