Independent play

Hi all! My 9mo doesn’t play alone in his playpen anymore, he comes up to the mesh and cry for us to come back in and as soon as we sit inside he goes up playing with his toys. Any idea on how to support him to play independently? We have tried letting him cry for a bit but he doesn’t stop until we either pick him up pr sit with him .

Hey, sorry to say it but there's not all that much you can do. This is a phase that we went through for quite a long time and think it's a natural part of their separation anxiety. We had to let our son out of the playpen more at this point as he steadily started to cry even at the slightest hint that he was going to be put in there so that helped a little but he would still stand and scream at the gate if we left him for even a few seconds. It's intense but you will survive it.

Thanks faye! Curious how long did it last?

.... He's 9 months old! My 3yo can only tolerate short periods of independent play.... And she's 3. So at 9 months old he is doing what he is supposed to be doing.

@Ash the really intense upset from about 7/8 months until about 13. He's 15 months now and more able to be left safely for short times. Not always though.
