School admissions

Hi girls So my son will be 4 in July and I’ve been told he’ll be going to reception when I apply for school admissions. Is this right?? I thought he will be going to nursery and reception starts at 5 years old and year 1 at 6 years old. Pretty sure that’s how it is. Am I missing something??

They start the September after their 4th birthday- so for our July babies, that’s September 2025. They’ll be 4 when they start school. Unless you choose to delay or defer, in which case you can choose for them to start when they’re 5. But either way you need to apply for a school place now (before middle of Jan) and then either accept the place (in April) or defer.

My daughters 4 on 26th July and will be starting school that September. The children will be all turning 5 that school yeh, but obviously some alot sooner than others!

My daughter will be 4 on 5th August so would have barely have turned 4 when she’s starts this September. Shes currently at the nursery attached to the school we hope she gets a place at so I feel like she is ready to start school come September

Yeh that's right, they'll watch be going straight into reception. Nursery would be if they are there now. My LO turns 4 25th August and starts school a couple of weeks later

Yes - reception at age 4 and year 1 at age 5. They turn 5 years old during their reception year. So reception runs from Sep 2025-Jul 2026. They can go to nursery any time before school. My daughter has been going to nursery since age 1.

My little girl is 4 in July, and going into reception in September 2025

You can delay a year because they’re summer born so they go when they’re just 5. You can still have them start in reception, you might have to argue but the LA would have to prove it’s in their best interest to miss reception, which it’s not
