Happy smile or gassy smile

So I’ve been wondering . This is my first baby and he’s 3 weeks today and when they are sleep why do they smile is it because they are working on their face muscle or is it from being gassy or from poops ?

I’ve been wondering the same thing

I noticed when my baby is pooping or pushing a fart out, her face will get slightly red along with her smile. She’s 1 month today. Looks like your babe is just happy to be sleeping hahah

Probably a combination of both but I have definitely heard of people calling it the windy face. I think it’s around 6 weeks ish that they can start smiling at you properly

I’ve read it’s their muscles having a jerk reaction. But gassiness makes sense too. Your son is so cute🥹

It’s gassy smiles still! Babies don’t start reactively smiling til 6-12 weeks!

Right now smiles are a reflex, like pooping. Around 6 weeks they lose some of those reflexes, so when the smile it is more of a reaction and they also have to relearn to poop.

@Shaely what do you mean relearn to poop?

@Chante' so when babies are born, they have a pooping reflex. They tend to poop while eating, and pooping is involuntary. Around six weeks they lose the reflex, so they have to learn how to poop "on demand" and use those muscles. Babies can be fussier and uncomfortable during this period till they learn to poop.
