Appointments

Just had my first appointment with a midwife in Birmingham. We want to have scans/give birth in Coventry as we’re moving in the New Year. Midwife told me to call Coventry myself to book my first NHS scan, so I did. But Coventry won’t speak to me, adamant that a midwife must book the first scan for me. 10+2 already, I just want to be given a date - particularly as it’s likely to be around Xmas/New Year! 🙃

Hi! I am also moving in the new year but have been continuing with appointments with current nearby docs/hospital until I’ve moved and can transfer. Would you be able to have your scan in Bham? Or perhaps you can self-refer to Coventry?

I tried to self-refer with Coventry and they didn’t want to know. I’ve only had one appointment so far and that was at my local GP in Birmingham, where I ended up self-referring. I’d rather not confuse things by changing part-way through if I can help it. I know you are allowed to choose the hospital you want to give birth at and that’s the hospital that will see you for scans etc! There’s clearly just poor communication across areas. The hospital I want to receive care at is a lot closer to my workplace (handy for scans). Given central Birmingham traffic, Coventry hospital is actually comparable to the Birmingham women’s hospital drive-time wise from where I live in the meantime! 😅

I'm Staffordshire based, but have decided I want to give birth at Macclesfield instead of Stoke. I just self referred online for Macclesfield maternity care, they phoned me to check it was definitely that hospital I wanted my care at as I'm technically out of area, and booked in my booking appointment with one of the hospital midwives. I do still have appointments with my community midwife though, so not all of your appointments will be moved over until you move house and register with a local GP. There's no reason why they shouldn't let you transfer your care from Birmingham hospital to Coventry
