Trapped wind?? Constipation? Something else?

Bit of a strange one but my 4 week old really seems in distress at night time, she brings her legs into her belly, strains, screams, her face goes bright red and her whole body goes tense. This only seems to be at nighttime, she will still bring her legs into her stomach in the day time and move about but ahead doesn’t seem distressed and in pain like she does at nighttime. It seems like trapped wind or constipation but we are doing movements for her like bicycle legs and tummy massage and she lets out some huge farts but still seems in pain. In terms of constipation in the day time she is doing Atleast 3 large, runny poos with no issues but come the nighttime she’s barely getting anything out. Has anyone gone through anything similar? Could this be something completely different? She is solely breastfed, has been really sicky since birth (health visitor said reflux) and also has an umbilical hernia that is really sticking out, her belly seems bloated and hard. I will be contacting the dr first thing but I just wanted some advice as I don’t want to be fobbed off by the doctor.

i have the same issue apart from my daughter has a cow milk allergy - the hernia is like an air pocket on each side of her belly button and shes really distressed right now

100% colic

It sounds like witching hour, crying for an unknown reason in the evening

@Charley I’ve never heard of that before, it’s horrible she sounds so distressed

@Charlotte nice to hear of someone else going through it, I’d never heard of the hernia before, it makes me so sad because she seems in so much discomfort and the last week of so it seems to of got much bigger but not sure if that’s just her getting bigger. I wasn’t sure if it could be an allergy or atleast something I’m eating/drinking not agreeing with her that’s causing this, how did you find out about the allergy in your daughter?

@Alexandra could it be colic if she’s not like it during the daytime? I haven’t done much research on colic so i don’t know too much about it

@Sophie https://huckleberrycare.com/blog/witching-hour

Colic is quite none descript. This is a symptom of something. I would take her to the GP

Colic is just a bit of a shit description for not knowing what is happening. Some babies so cry a lot. But my baby has started presenting similar at 11 weeks. The thing that helped us is warm baths every night followed by tummy massage.

@Sophie its really stressful as i cant do anything about the hernia i get a lukewarm hot water bottle and let her do tummy time on it which seems to help. my daughter kept throwing up when she was in special care (was there for 21 days) as they were trying out different milks and i was breastfeeding at the time and hd to go on a strict no dairy diet then she stopped being sick- i now have prescribed milk i have to collect every 2 days. She is having her 6 week check up in January when she will be 9weeks so i will ask more questions about her hernia and screaming ect x

My little one is exactly the same with the kicking out and tensing but only at night. Shes solely breastfed and used to poo every nappy but now it’s just the odd one in the day. She’s had a rash but dr say what it was other than it wasn’t viral. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s an allergy through me … but like you it’s only night time. She looks like she’s in so much pain it’s horrible to see ;( I started her on infacol yesterday to see if it helps but early days yet x

My 5 week old is exactly the same. Mainly between 8.30-12 at night. Breast fed. Doesn’t have a hernia. She’s also no only doing one bigger poo a day and then maybe a medium one and that’s it. Whereas before she had a poo every nappy. It makes getting her down to sleep so difficult and hate seeing her in pain. If you find a solution let us know! Hope they grow out of it soon

@Rachel mines just been through it again so I put her on her back for 5 and it eased, picked her up and it started again so back on her back. I don’t want to keep that up though as it’s just after a feed so don’t want her being sick. I’m due to see my HV today so I’ll be asking x

Our baby used to do this and it’s only just started to settle down at 7 weeks. I believe it was infant dyschezia as he was pooing etc fine https://www.childrensmn.org/educationmaterials/childrensmn/article/21819/infant-dyschezia/

So we went to the doctors this morning and they said she’s a very colicky baby, I feel slightly fobbed off with this as they came to that conclusion without seeing her properly as she was asleep and content in her car seat. Advised to take infacol so we started that this evening, also had a warm bath which she was so relaxed in she fell asleep. Had milk and the infacol at 7pm and she’s been sound asleep for nearly 3 hours, no restlessness like normal so fingers crossed this may work

I saw my health visitor this morning and she said it was trapped wind (she witnessed the squirms). She advised to try and keep baby up on shoulder if possible as the pressure on thier tummy may help turn to burp and also bicycle kicks, tummy massages and a bath if possible. She also said to keep with the Infacol but advised it does take a few days to work x

@Carla do you give her infacol with every feed? I started it last night and after every feed she had massive poos and slept so well. We never really had any issues throughout the day so wondering if I need to give it to her then

@Sophie colic is a non diagnosis (pisses me off) we went to the main hospital on the weekend because my baby was very constipated. They tried to tell me her crying was colic until they actually examined her. She was squirming a lot. Gave a suppository and she has been regular since. The thing is as the babies gut matures and they get bigger it will appear to be better and they will sleep for longer. But if it gets worse or doesn’t change continue to persist. Babies shouldn’t be in pain and you know your baby.

@Briony the thing is she doesn’t really cry a lot and I told the doctor this and said the cries come when she’s in discomfort and she was point blank adamant it’s colic, does seem to be just what they say to get you out. The infacol seemed to work wonders last night though so we’ll see.

@Sophie yep same!!! My baby was colicky we had a real witching hour for ages and you’ll know the difference. It’s when she was very newborn and we couldn’t settle her. But now it’s all around her bowel movements and wind…

@Sophie yeah i give it to her with every feed :) .. just trying to get into the routine of it x

@Carla it is hard to find a routine with it, I forgot twice today and I felt awful but also trying to remember her vitamin drops and then all the medication I’ve been given since the birth but It was only day one today I’m sure we’ll get there

@Briony now understanding it it does make sense, she’d always have a few hours in the night time where she just couldn’t settle and seemed in so much pain but in the day seemed fine but since giving her some medication she’s just been so relaxed and even a different baby in the daytime

In relation to this, we have been using infacol for 3 days now.. first night she had 2 massive runny poos and slept so perfectly throughout the night, seemed so content and peaceful.. yesterday she had a green poo and was a bit fidgety and today she’s been so irritable again and every poo has been green. Could this be linked to the infacol or the colic or do you think another issue all together?

@Sophie I would maybe speak to someone about this (get some support around feeding). Green poos can be indicative of some sort of bowel upset. But also perhaps if baby isn’t hanging on the boob for long enough (and is basically getting a lot of the more hydrating milk - which is more watery. If you’re switching breasts, burp between boobs) and always drain the boob properly first. I was advised to fo back to the first boob after you’ve done both so baby can get to the fattier milk. You could also try paced breast feeding. So stopping feeds and burping part way through. I sit my LO up layed on my chest like she’s in a carrier after feeds and it really helps with trapped wind and she will burp herself a lot. Infacol wasn’t great for us to be honest. It might be worth getting her assessed for a tongue tie. https://www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au/amp/article/baby-poo-guide https://www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au/amp/article/baby-poo-guide

I was told my baby had one when we took her into paeds over the weekend for constipation. This wasn’t picked up when she was in hospital. But could explain her fussiness etc when she was a lot smaller.

@Briony we was told before being discharged that she has a very minor tongue tie but they said it’s so minor it’s not even worth mentioning
