Infant Gaviscon

My 9 week old babies are on infant gaviscon. I have found it’s making their poops constipated and therefore like an adults would be, hard and play dough textured. They are really struggling to get it out. I’m worried they are going to tear or better yet get so blocked up that they make themselves unwell. My doctors are closed so cannot get in touch with a health professional to figure out how to soften their poop. Because they are so young options are limited but just wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks

My daughter is under hospital dietitian and they said to either do Gaviscon or Carobel. I tried Carobel and baby is doing fine. They do the same thing: thicken the milk BUT Gaviscon is also for indigestion too so if baby needs medicine for that, maybe stick to Gaviscon? But maybe you can try Carobel? You can buy over the counter but ring up pharmacists before going as not all sell it.

I had this happen and cut back the dose of gaviscon. I found my little girl didn’t need as much as the doctors said and it helped stop her constipation too. I’m not sure if this would be an option depending on how severe your little ones needs are?

@Vincia it’s quite severe. constant crying. their hiccups are all the time if gaviscon hasn’t been given. they will not sleep or stop crying but since being on it they have been so good. and actually happy and smiling rather than crying. you can actually hear the milk coming up and sometimes they actually choke or gag on it causing a coughing fit. so i definitely think their dose is working for them. and they are pooing it’s just clearly hurting them so much and i just need to find a way to soften the stool :(

@Summer-Rose they are definitely more severe than my little girl. Sorry I couldn’t help! I did used to give sips of water which helps but I’m not sure how young you can do that?

The same thing happened to my little boy i eventually made the decision to take him off of the gaviscon but he was on laculose for a little bit and it helped massively you can buy it from the pharmacy so no need for a prescription we were prescribed 2.5ml twice a day but my little boy never needed that much so you could always try 1.5ml once a day at first and work your way up x

Hi lovely, my little girl has just come off Gaviscon and gone onto omeprazole because of severe constipation. But what we did to relieve it first with advice from dietician and GP. Cool boiled water twice a day, 1 - 2 oz with a teaspoon of apple juice. Lactulose, 2.5 ml twice a day Windi pipe, once a day. Hope it settles for you x
